i think you can do a 2443 with out going thru the top, but it gets real thin... bernie bergman advertises a 2500cc, but i dont know anything about his stuff, as i have never seen one of his big motors in person. i think the 2443 is a 90mm stroke with 94mm pistons, but cant remember off the top of my head.

there is the posibility of putting in a 96.5 cylinder in, but these are kind of race only, and will distort in no time. But they do fit with in the stock head stud pattern.
I have also seen 98 porsche cylinders with in the stock head stud pattern too, but this takes a load of mods to make work. Definitly not a drop in.

So an 86 crank with 96.5 would be 2516cc
put a 90 crank in and you would be looking at 2633, but that 90 crank will be doing some flexing in race conditions with out using big main journals.

Remember this is all race only in mind.

that is all we plan to do is use it for drag racing

There are Type 4 engines that are close to the 3.0l mark, and Jake Raby of www.aircooledtechnology.com is building a T4 that is going to be near 3.4L.

Granted this has little to do with what you asked, I just thought I'd share.

Could always check out the LN Engineering folks. You can get 104 mm pistons with cylinders from them, then you can go even bigger CC. I have been reading their stuff and their aluminum ones, though near to 3 grand and up for the set, less weight and keeps the engine cooler. This is, if you want to spend that much on them.
