i have a 67 bug that i already have replaced all the brakes and suspension. now i am doing some custom stuff like narrowing the front end and i am also putting a stroker motor in it along with a lot of other things. my question is, is it really necessary to have disc brakes and spend all that money. if i have replaced everything and i mean everything......shoes, wheel cyl.,hardware, steel braided lines, new hard lines, master cyl.! everything is new so is it a must to spend 700$ on CBs DROP SPINDLE WIDE 5 DISC BRAKE KIT? please give me feedback. this is an interesting thing to discuss!!! thanks JAKE #1 VW

Nothing is a must, it all depends on how fast you plan to go with that motor in there. If you are racing in rush hour traffic then ya, it might be a good idea to get discs just for that stalled car in the middle lane and the Honda with it's flat tire in the break down lane.

The 67 had marginal brakes when new so just don't expect to stop on a dime. If you replace the backing plates you can go to late model with thing 5-lug drums or one step better replace the backing plates with type 3 and use early T-3 5-lug drums. hey guys, im planning on putting in a bigger engine(1776 or 1835) in my oval which has the stock style breaks in.Would I be fine with disk brakes only in the front or should i go with all four? I plan on doing some street racing and dont want to hit the lady selling corn on the street...thanks

Disc brakes all around is what I run on my Ghia Vert. I don't like adjusting brakes and it sure stops and slows down a heck-of-alot better! Man, upgrade those brakes, keep up with the times. It will be for your safety and others anywho.
Good Luck,

disc brakes up front is more than plenty for most applications. Once you get above stock hp, it's a good idea to upgrade the brakes- as was stated in an earlier post, stock beetle brakes are barely adequate with stock horsepower. is it worth the cost? well, what's your life worth?

You can save some money by junkyard sourcing the parts- if it is a ball joint front end, hunt up late super beetle front brakes and master cylinder.

If you want to save money and are running wide 5's, get some converters and then get the ghia breaks for 230 or so from cip1...
You dont need the wide five discs to have the discs upfront.

I seen people pop wheelies with the adapter plates and come down there strong
it can save u some money..
CIP1 has the ghia breaks instead of going to Junk yards
