Restoring a 58 vert and want to put a turn key performance engine (1776 or 1835) in it. Looking for reccomendations on high quality reliable engine builder. Presently considering Scat, GEX and Quality German Auto Parts.

Erik G Mon Jul 28, 2003 1:26 pm

out of those three scat would be the best choice. Run away from the other two.

check out BAP, they advertise here and the shop manager seems to know a lot, and seems to actually care about his customer, which is more than I can say about Gehx or Quality Herman. Where do you live? I am sure it would be easier to recommend a shop close to you

also, what kind of $$$$, and what is your time frame? I can build you a quality engine with all new (not rebuilt) parts for a resonable price. only if time is not an issue though, I have a rather large workload coming and I am at least 4 months out

Yeah, look into BAP Imports. http://www.bapimportparts.com/

Bought a turnkey 1600dp from them a year ago and very pleased. They also offer different displacements and options. Plus, a Samba advertiser!

HEY DEAFY, THANKS FOR THE PLUG, I APPRECIATE IT. STEVE SHOP MGR. BAP

No problem. My experience with you guys was great. I've said it in several other posts. Honestly, I'd be as quick to be critical if it weren't a good situation.

I did my research before choosing BAP, and I decided what you offered was the best dollar value I could find. The internet comments were positive, too. I was most impressed that all of my pre-purchase questions were answered without hesitation or "I'll get back to you", and everything arrived as it was stated. No BS.

But what really sold me was that about 4-6 weeks after I got my motor, I received a package in the mail from you folks. It was a new blister pack set of performance push rods. A note was enclosed stating that there had been a few instances of the aluminum rods mushrooming, and to offset any future problems, you were sending these out.

Sure, you could have gambled and let your customers deal with it as warranty claims as they happened, but you took the high road and did a good thing. That rang to me as good customer service. BAP validated my choice then and there if I had any question at all.

Just curious why you state to run away from Quality German Auto Parts. I thought they were decent. Have I heard wrong?

VW paradise is also a good place to have a motor built. Jason has built two motors for me and both ran very well, no problems. he is going to be building my new 2276. check them out.

What about Monroe? They(or he?) advertise in the classifieds. They have good prices. "quality motors for decent prices" it says on theirs ads i believe.

I don't know about monroe. Quality german I have heard bad things about, but I do not have any first hand experience with them. However, you do get what you pay for, and sometimes a warehose motor where they have 25 workers building engines at a time, will work well. But what if you get a friday evening motor instead of a wednesday morning motor? I wouldnt want to take the risk. I believe Steve at Bap has said he and one other guy are the only engine builders? And I think you said you use new cases?

A good quality motor nowadays almost needs to start with a new case. From there get the best quality engine parts you can afford, and have your motor built by a competent builder. buy local if you can, To keep money in your neighboorhood, but arm yourself with knowledge here first, so you don't get screwed. Or find a good machine shop and build it yourself. You will have a new found joy in your abilities (after a lot of nasty words) and you will have peace of mind that your engine was done the right way, and that if and when things do go wrong, you have the knowlede to fix it.

Question was asked where I live. I am in New York and far away from most VW stuff. Know any engine rebuilders on the East Coast? Getting all my stuff now from the West Coast.

I'm diggin BAP...I purchased my 044's and 94mm pistons from them. Great service and the people are always friendly. My folks live in Phoenix, so I stop by there whenever I'm in town.

Hey simmons,
Call Monroe and get yourself one of his 1915's with some webbers.
I also live in New York and had hom biuld me an engine. I also got a Freeway Flier from him and would be happy to take you for a ride if and when I go home.

I dont know about the other venders that were mentioned but my experience was just great. I talked to Monroe daily about my engine and transmission choices and then figured out what I wanted. It came a week after it was done and drives fine.

I dont think you would get a more reliable engine at a price like that. I also know some people in New York that can look at it if it went wrong. Do you still want to get something from the East coast? I know a few private old skool veedub guys who just sit around and build engines. Is there a time problem?
email me with questions I will be glad to help you out.

Really think of what you want to do with the car how long you want it to last and what you have to spend. If you dont know much about engines I can help you there as well cause only a few months ago I knew nothing and had to do all the reasearch you are doing now.
Feel free to email me with quesitons and or shoot me ur email
later
Mark
