I'm thinking of getting these General Grabber AT 2 for my snycro: here's the specs for them: 215/65 TR16 98T 1653 lbs. 44 psi 27" 772

the only thing that worries me is the 44 psi. i've read that the tires should inflate to at least 50 psi. does anyone know if this would be a problem?

if anyone knows anything about these, i'd love to hear your opinion.

thanks,
r

Anybody tried these yet? I see tire rack is now selling them in the 27x8.5QR14 size. And reading the reviews they sound great! I was getting ready to upgrade to 15s so I could get the BFG ATs, but now maybe I'll grab these General Grabber ATs in the 14 size for a lower cost. Any thoughts?

Havent yet But im going to. Walmart sells them locally so you could save on shipping if you have.

I just got these put on at Sears, they matched the tire rack price of $71. First impressions, improved handling with stiffer sidewalls, it just feels better and I like it around town. On the freeway they are a bit louder than standard road tires. We'll see how they do over time, but should be great as the reviews on tire rack are favorable. It's nice to have a new tire option for the 14" wheels.

the reviews for them were awsome. It says they excell in everything except sticky mud.

will these fit on a 2WD? or do they need the extra 2" or so (of body height) that the Syncro offers?

I have heard they will work on 2WD vans. I measured and I have room or so it appears. But Im going to be lifting mine anyway.

like the BFGs, I think these will fit with standard springs but rub with carat springs.

if you have factory alloys or similar rim...stock steel rims are too narrow I believe.

Hey jayzoid, let's see a picture of your van with the general grabbers on!

Dang the sears here wouldnt match the rack's price. He said $109 a piece. And that doesnt include installation. It looks as though even with shipping it will be cheaper to buy them from the rack and have a small shop put them on.

I have the General Grabber AT2 (27x8.5r14) on my 2wd van. They seem to fit fine and I love them. I will probably put the same tire on my jeep when it is due.

I tried to compare specs on the BFG AT in 27x8.5 R 14 to the same size general grabber..

They both have load rating 95

I find a couple differences.. the Grabber is 30% cheaper, and weighs 30% less.. at least the specs I found, if they are right, is that the BFG weights 30 pounds, vs 20 pounds, per tire, for the grabber..

Also, the BFG is slightly higher speed rated, R instead of Q, and allows inflation to higher pressure, 50 vs 44..

if you really want a killer tire in 27x8.5 R14, and price is no object, Nokian makes a CS in that size.. has a 102 Load Rating, I believe thats 1875 pounds. Its an 8 ply 65lb inflation tire.

I may be totally wrong but it seems like a lighter tire would be better since the main problem with putting larger than stock tires on a vehicle can cause your brakes to fail. Normally it is recommended not to go more than 3% larger but the BFG-AT and the General Grabber are nearly 4% larger. Anyway, this might not matter at all but it's something I thought about.

Your right that the speed rating for the Grabber is lower than the BF-Goodrich but unless you are planning to drive your van 100 miles an hour this doesn't seem to be a big deal. I was under the impression that the speed rating was more a legality thing - the speed rating of the tires needs to be more than the max speed of the vehicle??

In my tire search I looked at the Nokian Hakkapeliitta CS and decided they were more of a great winter tire - not a year round tire. I wanted a year round tire that would be good off-road and in snow.

The last I read on the specs for the 27 x 8.5 Grabber AT2 is that it is rated for 50 - not 44 PSI. Per the General Tire website.

mysticalclimber Mon Mar 17, 2008 11:21 am

Yes, I was told at Discount Tire that they are rated for 50 psi - but I've had trouble finding any definate specs online.

Is it true that you can't put the General Grabber AT 2s on stock steel rims? Any one try it yet?

otiswesty Tue May 27, 2008 10:34 pm

I put a set of the General Grabber AT2 on my syncro today, 27x8.5x14 load range C. They look very similar to the BFG All Terrain TA which are now NLA. Nice ride, only slightly larger than the 196r14 Vanco-8 that were on before at 26.2 inch.

Pic to follow later.
