Whats the business on either end of the intake?
Thanks Erik, the silver valves on each intake manifold are spring loaded pop-off valves. If you have a backfire it releases the pressure preventing damage to the blower vanes.

Supercharging is all about torque. :) I've gone on about top speed but in reality it's never going to be used. Torque is the everyday asset to this car which translates into hill climbing ability without the need to bury your right foot in the floorboards or chop up and down through the box. If you read the performance figures in the Autocar report on the 40hp Beetle you'll see the 50-70mph times are reduced from 21.2 down to 11.9 secs...that's torque in action. :D |

Hi John,
Congratulations!!
I could not be more happy for you. There is just nothing like running a vintage blower. Looks good! Great job!
How much boost are you getting?
When running long and hard (hot) I had occasional vapor lock with the fuel pump mounted on the blower. I finally put a modern rotary under the tank.
I thought Alejandro was going to put an idler on the setup. If you ever decide you need one please let me know.
My thoughts and prayers are with your neck.
Cheers, Howard |

Thanks Howard, don't know how much boost as I'm not running a gauge. I'm not sure I want one...there lies madness, chasing missing psi.

Thanks for the tip. Might have to stick with the SU as I'm still 6 volt.

Yes he's making one now...should be added soon.

Thanks, it's slowly improving. :) |

It is a good way to keep an eye on blower and engine. I have had it indicate a leaking hose and bad pop off.

I still have one more small diameter 356 12 volt generator I can send you. Might need a rebuild. Just let me know. |

John, looks great - jewel-like, even. I imagine Betty has no idea what she missed by running it stock all those years...
Hopefully the new ration of neck-snapping boosted power won't make your current health situation worse! Everything in moderation, eh?
Well done! |

Yes I take your point Howard...there are a few more joints in the intake tract to leak on a Shorrock.

Hmmm, I'm keeping my head down at the moment after the money I spent on the car recently...need to stock up on brownie points before launching into a 12 volt upgrade.

Thanks Dave...some times I just go out to the garage to look at it.
Actually Betty drove the car for quite a while with a Big Bore Kit as she needed to get home on the highest point in Berkeley.
I'm putting together the annual "Betty's Baby" Newsletter in time for Christmas...I always let her know where we've been and what's been done to "her baby" during the year. |

While I'm waiting for the weather to improve I thought I dabble with a few pictures. Here's one at Winchester Cathedral I though might look dramatic in black and white.

Something "ghostly" about that pic John, I like it, BTW sorry I didn't see all this business with your engine upgrades (most of it goes over my body/paint minded head) but it does look beautiful and all that talk about torque through 50 to 70 would make any Ghia owner "long and hard" (hot)... as Shorrock puts it
PS. didn't know about the neck either, c'est va? |

I used to shoot everything in B&W in my Photographic hobbyist days and occasionally with Infra Red B&W film. It used to give these ghostly effects but of course nowadays with Photoshop it just a matter of clicking a few buttons.

Neck's not painful at the moment but still got two numb fingers on my left hand. :? |

I've got to get these black & white pictures out of my system. Just loving the way the high contrast gives the car that extra sparkle. |

That car is beautiful John, Im jealous of the car and the scenery. We dont have centuries old buildings here in Texas, or many lowlights for that matter. Great pictures

| Ok, as long as you are giving away screen savers I will take that one  That is unbelievable in B/W, love the contrast in texture and the interplay between old and new (New still being almost 52 years old  ) because as we all know "Old is the new New" 8) |

| I have to agree, John, that last pic is very nice. The car, the surroundings, the black and white format, it all results in a very beautiful and "period looking" shot. I would expect to see a photo like that in an old magazine like "Life", or perhaps the original sales literature for the 1958 Ghia. Very nice, indeed! |

Thanks guys...I have to admit I do have some good antiquities to work with around here, excluding myself.
I've been rejigging the engine bay a little today. Moved the coil from on top of the supercharger and replaced it with this:
I got it NOS from Ebay for a good price; a Judson Electronic Magneto. They're always described as rare but they're not...not a magneto either, just a transistorised coil. This one is the earlier version (about 1965) with the wide label so a period correct accessory for my Shorrock Supercharged 1385.
Steve I've sent the screensaver by email. |

Today was our local club's annual Show 'n' Shine but I took a short trip from our pub venue to somewhere more photogenic. The village is Cheriton in Hampshire.
