Back in the late 70's my buddy's father in law who was an independent insurance agent bought a 1965 sunroof bug from one of his customers. comedian Andy Kaufman. the father in laws intent was to build it into a HDRA class 11 baja bug. Unlike SCORE that required the body to remain stock the HDRA allowed seven piece baja kits.
Here is a pic of that car in competition at the 1981 mint 400.

A friend used to be Steve's roommate in downtown San Jose by San Jose State University before Steve got famous with his band Smash Mouth. I remembered Steve used to drive his Bug to a friend's house across the street from me back in the day.
woould that be the same roommate that owed him money, but woudnt pay up so he busted in the door and stole his mtn bike to pawn off and get his $$ back? |

If I recall correctly, Bundy's was a chop.
I heard Cobain's bug pulled a headstud, that's just what I heard. |

Wiki:
From 1967 to 1969, Maxwell Smart drives a Karmann Ghia during the opening credits of the television show Get Smart; however, the car is never used on the show itself, as Max continues to drive his Sunbeam Tiger.

I think he drove an Opel in some, too.
But then he isn't real, so maybe this belongs in the "in the movies/on TV" thread anyway. :? |

Sunbeam Tiger....
Quote: The Sunbeam Tiger is probably most famous for its staring roll in the TV series 'Get Smart', created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. The main character, Maxwell Smart, drove the vehicle to Control each week where he was given his assignment. Agent 86, er Maxwell Smart, received attention where ever he went, thanks in part to the stylish vehicle that accompanied him. fromhttp://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z12466/Sunbeam_Tiger/default.aspx |
