Not sure if I had the same problem but the tank out of my 69 didn't alow the fiber glass hood to sit all the way down on the body. The guys I bought the fiber glass body from said it was a common problem and advised me to punch down the tank about an inch where it obstructs the hood.

I used a BFH and now it fits fine. Be careful not to crease the metal and create a leak though.

Had to use a BFH on mine also. Both lower corners touched
the bottom of the hood. Beat them flat and everything is cool.

And it's fun  !

I had the same problem. You will have to use an early model style tank. The underbelly configuration is different and it allows the tank to conform better to the steering box and associated gear like tie rod ends, etc. I looked around for a used one and finally bought one brand new for cheap. You can even decide about going with an electrical guage or the old mechanical style. Anyway, it is an easy fix by going with an early tank.
