I believe it was a mount that allowed you to lock you spare tire to the body via one of the lugnut holes so no one could steal it.

I would agree with that. Porsches of the period used a strap.

I see the logic but isn't that kind of pointless? Don't most people also keep the lug wrench/tools in the trunk? Maybe it's not meant for theft-deterrent but for securing the tire during upside-down aerial maneuvers?

Interesting when they were made. My April '51 car doesn't have it, but my September '51 car does. Let's narrow this down while we're here. Anybody?

Wiggy Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:01 pm

December 51 does not, nor does April 52.

johnshenry Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:28 pm

My June '51 std. DOES have it.

Splitdog Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:35 pm

So far between June and December of '51 only.

Wiggy Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:37 pm

Mine is like super late December.

Splitdog Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:42 pm

I bet it coincides with a date with other changes.

MGBaja_Smurf Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:42 pm

I think you are supposed to lock the tire to it with a padlock. THAT would keep people from stealing it.

It was added in 1947 so the spare could be secured with a lock and chain.

Then they started it, stopped it, and started it again before stopping it. Here is a pic of a '49 at Lenny's shop.

steven wood Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:20 pm

My 1-51 standard has it.

Slowlow Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:55 pm

My car is a 9/51... and it doesnt have it :?

kdf38@netzero.net Wed Aug 29, 2007 6:21 pm

If the front storage area locks, it is not as important to have the bracket.
Could it be a std. vs. dlx kind of item?

Mike

Steven's January '51 standard has it, but my April '51 deluxe doesn't. My September 5th, '51 deluxe does.

Yeah, seems funny, not a continuous string of months based on the reports here. Maybe it was a market thing?
