Post up your fab skillz...metal work, plumbing, etc....

VWsArent4Hippies Mon Sep 03, 2007 8:52 pm

Here's a couple of things i've done to my bus:

Skim Mon Sep 03, 2007 8:53 pm

I would post up pics of mine but its not a VW its my 61 Impala vert I rescued out of a ravine. It had another car drug over the top of it.

chickengeorge Mon Sep 03, 2007 9:15 pm

Some narrowed trail arms I built with a jig off of the spring plate mount.
The welds are a lot nicer than the crappy pictures show them. It was all clean around the welds too even though the discoloration makes it look dirty. I just got them on the other day after sandblasting and paint. I hope they work...Maaaaaybe I'll die, maaaaybe I won't.

Previous owner felt the need to cut off the pan supports. My work certainly won't win any awards but it got the job done.

LOVE this topic =D>

Since I bought a welder (Cebora 155 amp MIG/MAG co2) I'm getting more involved in metal fabrication. Working on a bike (Honda MTX80) now, been welding like 5 brackets on that thing and every one is getting a little nicer.

This thread is a very nice source of inspiration for me.

I haven't had to do any steel fab on my car, so this is the only VW related thing I have.....plumbing. All brake lines minus the main line down the pan to the rear are new 304SS, and the fuel lines are 316SS 3/8" hard lines. Sorry, it's all I've got in less than a yr.

BACK OF THE ENGINE.....

The work looks nice but I do think it's quite dangerous to run a fuelline under the pan.
Is the car stock height?

Hotrodvw Tue Sep 04, 2007 8:05 am

Nope, it's dropped, but protected, I can keep an eye on it. I don't drive it in the rain, just the nicer days. I've logged prob. 3k miles, no problems.

What gauge metal did you use? Did you have any trouble with warping when you welded it?

allthewayalive Tue Sep 04, 2007 11:19 am

several years ago when i was into watercoolers, i cut down the grille from an '85 golf to fit my scirocco 16v with european spec headlamps, eliminating the high beam lenses.
went from this setup:
