Found this in 1979 on the Central California Coast. Towed it for $400.

a few years back, I was driving across the country to deliver a bus which I had sold. along the way, the buyer of the bus called me to tell me that he had bought another bus, and he was wondering if my co-pilot could pick it up and deliver it to him. so a couple days later, we are driving both buses through a tollbooth in western pennsylvania, when the tollbooth attendant tells my buddy that she had some VWs for sale. we make a call to her husband, and find out that he had owned a repair shop from '62-'68, and packed all the stuff away in '69. the next morning, we got to look through the stash. there was a '54 oval, a '60 beetle, a TON of NOS parts, a TON of used parts, a TON of workshop equipment and tools, and a freshly rebuilt okrasa engine. my buddy didn't have the cash to make it happen, so I offered him a set of NOS empi 48IDAs as a finders fee if I could buy the stash. $5k later. it was mine.

I had to rent a truck to get most of the stuff to philadelphia, I sold some of it there to the locals, and shipped the rest home. six months later, the local whom I had given the '60 beetle to wasn't able to pick it up, so I put up an ad on thesamba and ended up giving the beetle to some guy in ohio, who seemed very happy and somewhat surprised to get it for free.

A guy came into my shop having heard that im into old air cooled vws and mentioned that he had an old toolkit for a beetle in his shed. He said that he would drop it off later on that day if i was interested. I said i was ,thinking it would be a toolroll for a 70s fat chick and forgot about it. True to his word, he turned up that same day with this. £40 sterling later ,i nearly shat my pants!

I was talking to Terry Schuler at the Vintage meet in Michigan back in '93 or '94. He had his Heb there and offered it to me for 10 GEEZ. I was fresh out of college and 10 Geez seemed like a hundred grand...

Wiggy Sat Oct 22, 2011 7:17 pm

In 1993, it was.

It's funny when you mention Terry Schulers Heb. I remember the day he bought it and picked it up for under $3000 grand. It was advertised in Hemmings Motor news and when I called about the car, the lady said it had just sold. He had it at Bug Out 6 in Manassas, Va. He was flat towing it behind his car. It was a medium green with some primer brown spots on it. The top was rough, but it was there. The Heb was pretty complete. I have pics of the car, but no way to scan them.

I'd hope he got it for under $3000 grand!!!

The guy I bought my '51 used to own Heb #6. He bought it at Hershey in the 70s for $150.......!

Wow! Stories like this never fail to blow me away. I just pulled the album out and it was Bug Out 8 in May 85, not Bug Out 6. I had an email request to take digital pics of my pictures, so I just did. Hopefully the person I sent the pics to will post them on here. They are not the best pics, but it was still a Heb and I was 23 and it was quite a big deal for me then. It was big money for me back then, but I really would have spent it to get that car. I would have pulled the money out of my savings to get it. LOL

A mint, original 52 Split for sale at $2500 and a restored KDF (can't recall the year) for $5000. This was in 1977. Had to make due with my $400 64 Beetle as i couldn't afford either.

The first thing that pops to my mind was a couple years ago I found a 25hp fuel pump tin.
It was in someone's FREE box at a swap meet.

I guess I'll revive this old thread for fun.....
In 2011 on a lead for a 13 window bus I found, I called the owner of the bus and he told me pretty quick, sorry it just sold yesterday. I said ok well that sucks, well just for kicks I see the front end of a black bug sticking out from behind the bus in the craigslist photos so i ask, whats the story on that black bug....and he tells me, (no joke) O thats some old 50's convertible with them flip up things behind the doors! Trying not to trip over myself I asked, "well would you sell that" he said, "you actually want that ol thing?"....too make a long story short I called into work the next day, made the 12 hour trip and rolled home with my original black paint 54 oval vert for 500 bucks. Came with a free 100mm gas tank for it.......
I couldnt make this up, it was one of the coolest things thats happened to me while scoring vw stuff.
