Not in the same league as some of the bargains mentioned already but have recently picked up a Dehne fuel gauge for my oval for only £10 (approx $20), needs some work but can't believe my luck............... :D

I bought out a VW dealership that no one knew about. It took me 3 weeks of my Vaction time (night and day) to clear the whole thing out.
The place was set up in the 50's and then closed up as a VW Dealer at some point. It became a regular car repair shop from then on. The guy would not let ANYONE in the back room or parts area and it took me years of talking to the guy to evently access the place. You name it, it was there. Thousands of white cardboard part bins with dust covered NOS parts. Porcelain Signs, Matra Dealership tools, 2 50's 356 engines, 50s & 60's Sheetmetal hanging from rafters, Barndoor stuff, 50's Convertible stuff all NOS. Porcelain Dealer Signs, It was ridiculous. Too much to even say here. $2000 to clean it out. I'll never find something like that again.

Wow i dream of finding something like that. You are very lucky. Lets see some pics.

When I got my first split in 1981--a '53 Zwitter for $1000--I couldn't wait to ruin it. First chore: I yanked out the original (matching #s) 25hp engine, threw it into my other car, a "crappy" '64 Ghia, and promptly sold the whole car for $500. I was thrilled to get rid of it. I then ripped out the Zwitter's original upholstery, shifter, pedal cluster, steering wheel, heart taillights, and wheels, and sold 'em all for $50 ("one price takes it all") at a local swap meet. Someone got some good deals...

A quite good deal are my 4,5J Fuchs. All 4 are in a nearly NOS-condition (you can see a red stamp in them)! I paid 750€ for this set:

I found this in a local antique shop 9 years ago, I didn't know what it was for at the time niether did they, all I saw was the Hella name and bought it. It fit on my 67 hinges so I stuck it on for a car show. It was then I learned of it's value. I drove 200 miles back home praying I didn't hit a rock or creature. It may end up on my zwitter.

What is it? A German Politzei car light?

It's just a spotlight that fits a VW.

for me the best bargain was a petri wheel and matching petri button a friend gave me as reward for bidding him a batwing wheel from ebay for his 53 oval (he paid it also).
some other bargains: perohaus knuckle guards, some oval and split crank handles, one split horn button logo, all for free
one blaupunkt dortmund deluxe for like 5$
a pair of 58-60 semaphores in working condition, new lens, for 70$
a oval wheel button for something under 4$
complete 62 two fold ragtop clip with folding handle for 50$
other blaupunkt radios for less than 5$

I have seen them sell for $600 to $1100 for MIB, I wouldn't and didn't pay that much for it. Guess it all comes down to supply, demand and beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. But then again I grew up in a generation that bought rocks for pets.....

I tend to find some deals:

1959 Type I Ragtop - $275
1957 Type II Kombi Standard with OG Safari's and 2-tone Sand Green/Palm Green $700
1965 Type I 1-owner with dealer documentation and matching numbers $1000
1959 Type I - OG paint, matching numbers - $200
1965 Type II Kombi Standard - One Paint job, with middle seat - $500

All cars except the Ragtop were daily driver vehicles.

Recently:

I was chasing a 1959 OG paint Fjord Blue Ragtop Type I that was in a shed for 20 years. The lady just gave it away for some minor repairs to her house, DOH!!. This is just 3 weeks after her husband died

She also had what was to be one of those funky busses with all the windows and a sunroof that was OG 2-tone red/cream. She gave it away. DOUBLE DOH!!

Was that back when they were worth $18k?

The hebmuller is on the front cover of the Book Vintage Volkswagen by Flat four.
I was offered $40,000 before I even got it home!!

Follow this tread for a while, and if you're long enough into VW's and try hard enough there is several nice occasions... some You just pass (like a 1950 original Barndoor Kombi for 2500Euro) others You get... the most special deal to me was still a 1960 Ghia convertible and a 59 coupe I got to clean the garden of a retired bussiness man.... the garden contained 2 rusted out Barndoors, a split and a oval window, and two other cars. The cars where very much gone, didn't need a torch to take them in pieces, but it was just fun to clean the whole garden.... a few months later I sold the Ghia's and started my own shop.... all the rest is history...

happy days....

PS still picked up a wide engine lid spring (pre 55) for a mere 2Euro last Thursday on a show in Germany...
