i know this is common topic.. i searched.. but couldnt find anything specific..

so heres my problem..

im driving down the freeway and my oxs light comes on.. doesn't go off.. no apparent driving change...

what does this mean? what should i do..

Take a baseball bat place the end on the ground and your forehead on the other end, circle around it this way three times clockwise. Go to the gentleman at the bridge with the grey robe, answer his three questions. Be honest, don't be clever. Go over the bridge and down the lane where a lady in a white robe will ask you for the coin. Don't give it to her, it is the second test.

The OXS light is a milage based warning set off by a small black box under the van. It means nothing, other than it needs to be reset. You could replace your O2 sensor if you haven't in the last 60K miles (saves gas). The black box is behind the spare clamshell on the driver's side frame member you will find a black box with the speedo cables running from the speedo on one end and the cable to the wheel on the other. There is a raised lip on the (?) forward side with a button inside the rim push the button in as far as you can, a pencil end helps. This should reset the light for another 60K miles.

As Dogpilot said. The OXS LED comes on when VW felt it was time to change the O2 sensor. I however thought it was every 30K miles. The box Dogpilot refers to is a mechanical mileage counter, run off of the speedometer cable.

Most folks bypass this box when the speedometer cable (or box) begins to rattle, buzz, or click, as it is annoying when it happens and your window is down.

No harm done, other than you will need to keep track of your mileage manually to replace the O2 sensor (located in your exhaust pipe).

Actually, I wasn't sure of the mileage count, but I was reading part of the tech manual the other day, and it said the reminder is at 90k miles. But that's it, it's just a reminder, and has absolutely no association with nor effect on the operation of the O2 sensor or the FI system. You can drive from now to forever with the little light left on, if it comforts you at night, or reset it and be surprised again in ten years. You can get a long single cable (for the Canadian vans) and bypass the bugger forever (I did). Be sure to open up the little counter box and see the clever way they made it count such a long interval, milllions of turns of your front wheel. You can put a tiny strip of Mylar tape over pin 14 of the 14-pin gauge cluster connector to disable the light, or disconnect the wiring plug at the sensor box if you never wish to see it light up again. None of these things will have the slightest effect on the operation of your motor.
