Too cool. I need an NOS parts stash!

Snoop Bob Thu Nov 19, 2009 3:14 pm

BTW I don't know if it's your buddy or not, but bus wheel cylinder stainless insert service was posted in the parts classifieds today.

This is all pretty stuff and everything, but I heard someone might score some NOS tarboards. That would make this bus the most NOSish resto possible.....

npbusguy Fri Nov 20, 2009 8:02 am

Shhhh, the NOS tar strip score is a top secret project. I am waiting for the final details to surface from deep within the European mountains 8) .

In the interim, I have sourced a bunch more nice original tar strips but I have to wait for a warm sunny day to clean and flatten them out.

When I finally get to see your bus, I'm gonna lift the front floormat, turn the brake reservoir cover a quarter turn, remove the cover, and stare at the NOS-ness revealed underneath.

Keep it up, Neal.

Here is the result, a period correct all German master cylinder. Ahhh, that is going to look good under the bus where no one can see it.

Would a '58 have the flat top master cylinder reservoir? I don't know when the switch was made...

I think so. The one pictured above seems to be the common "replacement" resevoir. I remember David Mayes swapped a used upper section onto a NOS resevoir like the one Neil posted.

Ian Sat Nov 21, 2009 11:00 am

did you use a crush gasket between the resevior and the cylinder? i can never seem to find them

npbusguy Sat Nov 21, 2009 4:21 pm

Not sure when the flat top change was, but I am sure my reservior is supposed to be metal so I got rid of that funky plastic one the master cylinder came with.
Ian, I got the crush washer from Wolfsburg West for about $2.00

Here is today's progress.

Pulled out the tool cart and piled the top full of parts that needed to be installed.

This is the ciew of the master cylinder that John Pickens wanted to see

Ran all of the hard lines today. My brake line securing hardware should be finished at the plater on Monday and I will fully secure the metal lines next weekend or so.

Secured the front flexible lines with a set of NOS brake line brackets (thanks Jon Furst for the hook up)

I also put my steering damper in place today and cleaned and flattened some more tar strips too, but I didn't take pix. I really hope the NOS tar strip hook up takes place, but I will have to wait a few more days to find out.

Thanks Jon, I know what I am doing tomorrow  . I had it lined up but it must have twisted when I tightened it in place.

Your bus is showroom in everyway that I`m sure the bolts holding the master cylinder are Kamax and they look new. 8)

npbusguy Sat Nov 21, 2009 5:23 pm

OK, reservior has been re-oriented so that the hash mark lines up with the master cylinder. The ground is really cold at this time of night. :?
Yes, Kamax bolts with 14mm heads and 14mm nuts. All the hardware (unless NOS) has been or is being plated with zinc phosphate or black oxide. Some of the hardware is Doran or another original supplier.
The parts manuals don't call out specific brands for a location, but they do give size specifications and orientation which I follow.

j.pickens Sat Nov 21, 2009 8:26 pm

What is the colored coating on your hard brake lines?
Never used correct VW replacement for this, and all the original stuff I've worked on was greatly worn.
So I'm guessing the originals were painted or treated in some way, so what is on the surface of the tubes making it that sort of olive drab color?

npbusguy Sun Nov 22, 2009 6:53 am

Hey John,

The brake lines are made in Germany and are teflon coated. I just purchased the kit from Wolfsburg West and it comes with all of the hard lines needed to do a bus and costs about $50.00. The original lines I used as patterns were rusty or corroded, so I don't think they had any coating.

I can't find my "T" bracket for the back so I will have to buy a new one. Does anyone have a photo of the correct bolt that secures it to the frame.

Thanks in advance,

Neil

So, I get this secret spy photo from "TheSamba's favorite machinist" of my front wheel cylinders being sleeved with stainless steel inserts. Great, I am so excited that I can not sleep on my stomach tonight  .

As I mentioned before, this is being done as a special favor by a friend. If he wants to be known for this quality work, he will post something about it.

Snoop Bob Sun Nov 22, 2009 2:03 pm

I posted earlier in the thread...is he the guy that advertised the stainless inserts service 2 days ago?
