I believe the teeth on my window regulator is stripped. But I can't get it out because it loops around the vent window post that extends below the window.
I thank you in advance for any answers. Do I have to remove the post? Tomorrow I'm going to see if the local parts store knows how when I go to buy a new one.
Thank! |

| It's a one year regulator. Any aftermarket one will usually suck, but they work. Keep your eyes open for an OEM German unit. |

Getting the regulator out is usually the easy part. Putting it back in is like threading a needle in the dark. Do a search under window regulator and toyvergnugen for the author. there are lots of tips there. Basically there is a rectangular hole in the door panel. Use a long screw driver to press against the vent window bar and the regulator should slide out between the bar and the inside of the door panel. You may have to give it a pretty good tug. You do not have to remove the vent window for this procedure.
Used German regulators are better than the crappy reproductions that twist like a pretzel. When you say the regulator is stripped are you referring to the teeth where thwe winder asttaches or the long coiled spring thingy that actually lifts the window. If it is the latter I MAY know kind of a cheap fix. BTW I believe 65 to 67 regulators are the same. |

Thank you Both! Toyvergnugen, I will do a search for you past tips. In an attempt to explain my problem better, the teeth on the $5 window crank are good. the teeth that protrude from the door panel that the window crank meshes with are good.
When I try to raise and lower the window the window crank spins freely and the window does not go up or down. I hear and feel a 'clicking' similar to the sound and feel of a socket wrench in reverse. I used to be able to raise and lower the window if I used the window crank and helped it manually, but I think the teeth got worse and that may no longer work.
How can I go about finding a used german regulator? When I did an online search so far all I found was one on JBugs for $59 (I assume thats the flimsier one you mentioned)
Thanks for the hints, I can already do a more thorough online search now. |

| Sounnds like a problem I had in the past. The racheting sounds could be the coiled wire in the track not engaging. Usually it is only at the start of the coil that is stripped. Assuming your door panel is off. Push the window sash up about 1/2 to an inch to see if the regulator engages. Then reinstall winder handle and try using the handle to see if it will wind up the window from that position. If it does then you can put a small hose clamp around the bar about an inch from the bottom that holds the sash at that position that will prevent it from lowering past where the coil end does not engage. Remember this is a cheap EZ fix for the short term probably not something permanent. The window will stick up past the scraper a little when fully lowered but that is the whole idea, to prevent it from lowering to the point it won't engage. . There are a couple of passenger side regulators in the classifieds but I didn't notice any driver side regultors for sale. These get the most use and are probably harder to come by. Try posting a want ad. Hope this explanation of a temporary fix helps. |

That sounds about right. I was surprised to hear it's "a one year only part". |

| I remember needing '67 only regs, and am still hearing that. I'll stick with them as a one yr. only part. Not sure what's different though... |

| Does anyone know who sells the little neopreme spacers that fir at the bottom of the regulator? They maintain a distance of about a half inch between the winder mechanism and the door |

I'll revive this thread, as opposed to starting a new one. No one ever answered Dave here about the spacers for the window regulators. What is the common replacement for those if they're missing?
Thank you!

| Thanks for the follow-up. I was able to find some of those little spacers in a box full of parts. I'm sure that down the road someone will need to buy these. There are two per winder mechanism and keep the mechanism from rattling around within the door |

Okay. Well, I'm sure I can make something too. I looked on Wolfsburg West's website and didn't see anything. I might call them tomorrow.
Thanks!

| Whatever you do don't buy a reproduction one from Wolfsburg West or anywhere else I have broken a couple of those in the past when my window got stuck and I pulled the winder too hard. They are a waste of money like was stated already. |

Thanks. Nah, we were talking about the little spacers that hold the regulator off the door skin at the bottom. |
