Well, it's time. I have finally cleared my slate enough to get to work reviving my square. I just recently bought it. It's a 72 Fuel Injected relatively rust free squareback. I already have a bus and a bug, but this car is going to be my baby. I was into squarebacks long before I got into aircooled vw's.
The fuel injection appears to be complete and the engine is in the car. The rest of the car is completely apart and there are plenty of spare parts that came with the car, including an extra fuel injection harness and brain.
I brought my bus and bug back from the dead, so I have a certain amount of experience doing this, although I am sure I will have some questions about the car as I put it together, since I was the not one that took it apart.
Today I started putting the fenders on. The P.O. put all the bolts in bags and labeled them pretty well, which makes it easier. Got the front fenders on and lined everything up for the rears but I have a mystery part in the baggy for the rears.
I have two of these so I think that is one for each side. Anybody know what they are and where they go? |

Thread time! And here I thought you would have it done before you started one of these.
Just for some info, the car looks pretty good in person. The only rust to speak of is where the charcoal canister fits on. Can he use a section from a 70 to replace this? The one from my parts car is good... but is it the same? |

So this has nothing to do with my rear fender then huh?
Yeah, I normally don't have the patience to do the pictures for a thread. Avey has seen me work, and I think she can attest to the fact that I get a little hyper. |

Is that what you called about earlier?
My hubby says he accidentally deleted your message when he played it! |

Nope
I am missing a couple of the clips the hold the bolts on the front fender. Trying to see if you had a few salvaged from the 70 at your house. I'm starting to get a feel for what I'm going to need from that car.
I am also missing some pieces around the gas tank filler, and whatever it is that holds the gas tank filler door shut. |

I forgot the giant coffee-can-o-bits in Cottonwood. Might be some stuff in there. As far as the gas tank door goes... mine wasn't working at all.
ISP west is good for figuring out what you might be missing, even if you don't order anything you can read about stuff piece by piece.

OK, Now I've got a really stupid question. I've got some wiring touch ups to do and I want to make sure that my FI wiring is OK. Where is the diagram for the FI system. It's not in the regular diagram that can be downloaded here, and I can't find it in my Clymer (don't have the bentley yet). Anywhere else to look?
BTW, got all my fenders on and will have all my lights on and connected by Wednesday. I'll get some pictures then as tonight I was working in the dark.
I also figured out why the seat latches were in the rear fender bags. I guess they cover up one of the bolt holes.
Thanks |

OK, I did find the diagram in the FI manual that Russ has online. Is this anywhere in color though?
Also, I converted the FI Manual to PDF if anyone wants it in that form, as long as Russ is ok with me distributing it that way. |

It's also in the Bentley (in black and white). Color wouldn't do you any good since the wires are in black and white. The numbers are stamped on the wires near each end. You'll probably end up replacing a bunch of tiny spade connectors before you get it working right. |

| Hopefully not. The only homemade wiring i've found on it goes from the fuel pump back to the fuse box, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. |

| OK, another question. The relay that sits in the middle of the three on the fuse box is missing. There is corrosion where a relay used to sit, but there is nothing there now. Which relay is this? |

The one that bolts to the "firewall" near where the radio aerial comes through? That's the FI fuel pump relay. You need it.
You mentioned "homemade" wiring running from the fuel pump; probably someone has bypassed the relay and put in a switch somewhere. The relays are not hard to find. I got one from CIP for $9 and it works...got two of them just in case tho as it is not the "correct" part.
This relay should exactly match one under the rear seat (beside the voltage-regulator) which is the power relay for the ECU...they are the same Bosch Part#, but Bosch no longer makes these exact parts.
Another option is to just striaght wire the thing and then the pump will run all the time—this is inadvisable as you'll have to disconnect your battery every time you're not driving or the pumps constant running will drain the bat. |

Hey hey! That's a good idea...perhaps thats why my buzzer does not work; the relay is not there for me to know about! |

That's it!? I'm definetely not going to replace it. Thanks for your help.
I've got the day off and I'm going to be hopefully finishing up the wiring issues today. Got to figure out what is going on with the fuel pump wiring. More updates this evening. |

Hey Wes... I'm gunna try and get that book for you today. Stuck in Flag for the moment @ a coffee shop. The city might have to pay for a rental to replace the jeep for awhile!
I'll explain later. Good luck! |

I think she's resigned herself to the fact that mine is going to be running long before hers.
Bought a new light switch for it. It is missing the number 57 wire. Parking light warning. Not too worried about that right now. I may hunt down an original switch later. Avey, I hope you save every switch and relay off of your parts car. I did from my parts bus and it saved me hundreds of dollars.
Taking a break for lunch. Found a nice fat black widow under the car when I pulled the gas tank. Actually about a foot from my face. Going back with carb cleaner.
Gotta put the gauges in and a battery, remount the fuse block, make sure the pump is wired correctly, get some gas and I'll be attempting to start it. This will be my first go with a F.I. car, so we will see how things go!
Avey, is the book you have the clymer? I've got it. |
