Wes, I’ll bring the gauges Sunday, and if you need it I have a late model Bentley you can use. Let me know and it can bring it as well.

Yep that would be great, Eddie. I could use them both.

I guess I can't badmouth the p.o. on this thread eh?

We aims to please :D

Hehe, sounds good.

No go on getting it running to night. It's turning over but I'm getting no buzz from the fuel pump. I'll have to go throught the testing procedure spelled out in the Clymer.

Also have no generator light. Oil light went out though.

Any idea how long this thing was dead Eddie?

aveyinc Sat Oct 13, 2007 12:49 am

It was a good effort though.
Ask'em about the relays...

On another note: 400 posts for me.

jeromeaircooled Sat Oct 13, 2007 1:30 am

I don't need to yet. I think the search is serving me well. I think I am getting the relay click under the dash but not under the seat. I need to figure out what is going on with the second relay. Clymer says that both of the relays are on the left side of the engine bay. WTF?

Let me know when these questions should be moved to the F.I. thread.

Wes,

I got it last November, and the guy I got it from got it basically the same state as you got it, so I’m not sure when the last time it ran. The fuel pump might just be frozen up; you might try pulling it and soaking it in diesel, and run it backwards. Here is a good write up with pictures on tearing one down and cleaning. Also if you have a DVM, I would verify that the pump is getting power from the relay.

I'm only getting on relay click when I turn the key, and no fuel pump buzz, so troubleshooting shouldn't be too difficult.

I've got a couple of things I'm going to try today. My gut tells me that the relay is not working. I have a stray wire on the fuse block that I was going to deal with later but it may supposed to be going to the relay. If that doesn't solve the problem I'll trace the wiring between the relays and the pump with my VOM.

The wife has a busy schedule today so I'm not sure if I'm going to have time to trace this down today, but for sure I'll get it tomorrow.

Make sure that the wire in the F.I. harness that sits at about 10:30 (if front center is 12:00) and heads forward in the engine compartment is connected. This is the ground through the ECU for the fuel pump.

Got a few minutes to work on it this afternoon. The relay was missing completely. I stole the rear defroster relay (not really necessary here in AZ) and wired it up. Got two relay clicks but no fuel pump buzz. I hooked the pump up directly to the battery and got nothing. So I pulled the fuel pump and I am going to do the diesel fuel trick tommorow. If I get time I'll pull it apart tonight and clean everything as well.

After focusing for several weeks on my bus I finally had a chance to work on my square again tonight, with help from Avey. A few weeks ago I freed the fuel pump with the diesel trick and I installed it tonight. After figuring out that a wire had come loose from the relay (need a new connector) and after Avey figure out that the fuse for the pump was blown (Her first VW repair diagnosis!!!) I got fuel to the rear of the car.

Only problem is that I believe that I hooked the fuel pump up wrong. I had fuel coming out of a fuel line directly over cylinders one and two, on the passenger side of the car. Isn't that supposed to be the return line. I think I mixed the two up and I am getting fuel on that side first. Does this sound correct?

Also, aren't worm drive clamps incorrect for an FI car? Should I have the clamps with the nice screws and no worm drives?

sounds like you have the fuel running down the return line, rather than the feed line -- which is actually not a big deal, except for that is where the pressure regulator sits (it is on the return side of the loop); just switch the line you have the fuel running to after the pump...

as far as the clamps are concerned, I prefer the non-worm drive clamps, simply because they are less likely to cut into the line itself...

BTW - congrats to you and Avey.....

In plain English that would be "just swap the hoses under the front of the car".

x2 on the fancy clamps. Worm drives aren't as reliable, and are bad for your hose. I have used them on the low pressure side and on vacuum lines though, because the right size FI clamps are so hard to find lately.

I was just going to ask where a good place was to find them. Are they the same size clamps used for a fuel injected bus? I have a couple of good sources for those.

Sharing is nice.

Hmm... I think I need to get some pictures of those cars together today. Gotta do some more tag-n-bag too. I wonder whos'll be road worthy first?

But I still... uh... have more to get done first... anyways.
My husband wants to get the white square up there too now. I think it would be awfully cute if he tried to join in on the fun.

Are you going back to the cars tonight after trick-or-treat?
Kahlil isn't doing candy this year, btw.

I'm not sure if these are the right size, but this the clamps the bus guys get.

I am going to try to get down there tonight. We'll see if my wife is wanting to go out and party.

"Clymer says that both of the relays are on the left side of the engine bay. WTF?"

Clymer spent the minimal amount of money getting official VW photos (and often reused Bug photos for Buses or Type 3s), then wrote their manuals without working on actual cars. Don't count on anything you read in them!
