I keep getting this message

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Too many connections in /home/thesamba/public_html/vw/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 48
TheSamba.com : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database
Thanx scooter

Yes, I have seen that a few times today.
It happens when the server has too many connections to the database.
I am checking into it.

It was a glitch in the Matrix.

Looking at the number of users online, I'd say your service provider is shorting you some bandwidth...

Not really bandwidth, but server resources... How is Samba hosted? If it's shared hosting - lucky this hasn't happened already, time to upgrade. VPS or dedicated, just a matter of reconfiguring MySQL.

Got some techie know how or a resident geek? :)

Yeah, tweak around with MySQL. Or something like that.

I think it's fixed now, one of the database tables appeared to be damaged and was locking up and causing visitors doing searches to be queued up.

It's an internal web server to database issue that causes that message. Bandwidth usage is actually a bit lower today.

The site has been on a dedicated server for many years. It is too massive for a shared host or VPS.

If someone on the site is a MySQL configuration expert, feel free to PM me, I'm always open to advice.

I figured, but hey - I've seen people try to get away with worst. ;) Nice work, thanks for patching that up.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead again, but for the past few days I've been getting the same message when trying to reply to posts in the engine forum. When it happened today, there was near 1,000 people logged in so I kinda figured the server was maxed out. Is there anything we TS people can do to fix the problem? Maybe funnel some donation funds into bandwidth?
Just wondering.

This is a problem that I run into often in the last couple weeks when trying to search in the forums including right now;

"Search is temporary disabled due to server overload. Please try again later.

This message only appears when the site is very busy."

Is there a remedy or is the site so heavily used now that searching the forums is more successful at off peak hours?

EverettB Mon Feb 25, 2008 9:23 pm

A new server is in the works that will be more powerful and eliminate these problems.

Unfortunately it is taking a bit longer to get going than I expected.

No money or donations are needed to make this happen.

I intentionally disabled the search if the site is busy over a certain level. It normally will turn on and off even when the site is busy.

May I suggest a new IBM Z9 Enterprise Server.

We have a number of them and you can run a number of different versions of Linux on it.

Prices range from $800,000 to $22,000,000 for the top of the line.

EverettB Mon Feb 25, 2008 9:34 pm

$800,000 is just out of my range.

Dangit

There's always Cray...but they'll set you back a couple mil.

Banzai KG Tue Feb 26, 2008 11:51 am

Glenn, you say you have a number of them. Why not donate one to Everett? :P

Sorry, but the z9 is now obsolete, IBM announced the new z10 today.
http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/marketwire/0366666.htm

Quote: Single z10 equal to nearly 1,500 x86 server

Quote: The z10 Mainframe uses Quad-Core technology and 64-processors, and was built for sharing in mind and providing virtualization capabilities that can support hundreds to hundreds of millions of users.

I think it's time to up the premium fee.

Sony is doing an upgrade on their servers. Want me to check with my son and see if they have any cast-offs.

Ahh those were the days. I started in R&D for the UKs first digital mapping project in 1972. I used to take my days work (on 1/2" tape) down to the computer suite to be run for the next day. High powered state of the art stuff.

The girls working on the digitising tablets all wore very short skirts. I remember it well. =P~
