I'm posting this for my dad. He has a late 50's super 90 motor, minus exhaust and air cleaners. It has been sitting on a shelf in his garage for a lot of years. I know it was running when he took it out because he ran it for a while in his oval. I know that it is not tired, he rebuilt it and had the machine work done by an old German guy in englewood CA. I did a search in the clasifieds and also did a google but could not find out much about this motor. What is a "realistic" price for a motor like this?
TIA

It is very important to know exactly what you are trying to sell. The engine number on the crankcase, just under the generator stand will give you some place to start. Then use the case number to determine exactly what year and model you have.
These old engines sometimes become mongrels, with a case of one engine, heads of another, carbs from another, etc.
Then it is most valuable to someone who is trying to restore a car of a similar date range. (MOST valuable to the owner of the car it came out of, of course, if that car even exists.)
You could probably just put up the numbers here.
There are charts out there on the internet, but I'm having a senior moment as to where they are. 356 Registry, a few other places, too.
By the way, I don't think they built super 90's till mid year 1960, but could be wrong.
Not in 1959 model year anyway.
As to value?
Anywhere from $500 to $5000. depending on what you have and how good it is.
If the machine shop is still around that did the work, they might be a good broker to sell it as they might be able to vouch for some of the work that was done previously. Of course, no one can vouch for its present condition without being somewhat invasive. A cylinder leakage test results would help, but it is still a pig in a poke.
