I've been tossing around the idea of selling my car to help pay for school. I'm pretty attached to it because it was my first car, and because my dad and I did the restoration together. Anyway I'd like to know what you guys think it's worth. I know this is pretty subjective but I'd love to know your thoughts. I'm just trying to figure out whether or not selling it will be worth the time, trouble, and the possible heartache of letting it go. We finished the car in late 1998 and the engine and transmission in 2000. The car has been driven only to shows, events, and light street use for the past 10 years.
Here are some pictures and a list (off of the top of my head) of things we did to the car. I will post some better pics if I can find some. The car is in amazing shape. All engine and transmission work was done by our good friend Lyle Cherry. It's fast, reliable, and a blast to drive. It was featured in the December 2004 issue of Hot VW's magazine. Thanks in advance for your thoughts, ideas, or advice!

First off, nice car!!! I would look at a website www.oldbug.com, and cars that are for sale on the Samba. This might give you an idea of what folks are asking. They may not be getting their price, but it would be a good starting point. If I might make a suggestion, I would take off the stickers on the windows, kinda de-personalize the car. From their the car looks fantastic.I would think you could start at $25,000. Some folks would think that your nuts, but you never know!!!
Good luck!!! Keep us all posted!!! |

It isn't worth much. I'll give you $500 for it.
Seriously, if you need the money to stay in school, then you shouldn't even hesitate to sell it. I realize there is some sentimental value with the car, but your education will mean so much more to you (and to your father) in later years. |

Go right over to the classified section of Samba and have a look maybe even post an add ... I sold one car in less than 48 hrs the other two have garnered interest but seems nobody here has thousands of dollars in mad money to spend on a car..... Your car looks great good luck

Why not sell it to your dad??? I would buy it from my son if given the option. Later on you could always buy it back when you are making good money from your education. |

Love the look you went with. I know how it is to part with your first VW and the regret of doing so. If its for school though get rid of it! Education is the most priceless thing this world can offer. Im almost glad I sold my first (a '70 fat chick) because now after school and almost a decade in my career I bought a rust free great condition 67. So go for it and who knows maybe something better will come along in the future. I would think you can get top dollar for it. I would take a look in the classified section and do your own research but for a car in that condition should go for at least 20G. I wouldnt go less. Some people will dispute this Im sure though. Good luck! |

Thanks everyone for the comments. I will look through the classified section here and on oldbug.com to see what others are asking.
I've pretty much made up my mind that I'm going to sell it as long as I get enough to make it worth it. I mean it's gotta bring enough to pay for a big chunk of my education otherwise I'd just keep it. My dad doesn't have the money to buy it and he's already got a 67 waiting for him to restore. He's tied up in a 32 ford project right now and he's putting money into that.
It will be hard to let it go. Part of me wants it to go so I can do something new or even another VW with a different look/style. But you know there's always a part of you that wants to keep them around. All in all I never thought I'd have it forever. I always assumed I'd sell it to do another car, so I should probably start moving in that direction. School is the most important thing for me right now. At 27 I can't afford to start and stop again. I'm real close to finishing and just need to keep on trucking until I'm done.
Here are some more pics I took today. If anyone else has some opinions or figures please throw them out there. Thanks!
*sorry, deleted pics. |

Good god man...why sell your car...or anything for that matter to pay for school.
My daughter is in her fourth year of collage and not a dime out of my pocket have I paid. There is lots-o-money out there just for that reason. It will take research and effort on your part but it will be worth it...trust me.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to cover collage expense and still keep that sweet ride?
Look into it.
Good luck

thats true man, ive got two degrees and am going for a BA in history and i get paid to got to school, but that is what being a genius gets you, not that im a diligent student at all, in fact im probably the worst student there is but my grades are astounding, but ive got scholarships and grants that pay for my school, books, transportation, housing, and they over pay me by 8,000 dollars and i get to keep it for what they tell me, unexpected expenses. so there are other ways than selling your car man, i got 5 vintage cars including my 63 ragtop and selling them would be a last resort for school. do your homework man and research the options before selling your little buddy there |

As one of the many millions of guys who let his first car get away, I suggest hanging on to it!
The more time that passes, the more you will regret you sold it.
You have a real nice car there and you have poured your time, effort money, sweat and blood into it. You can never replace the first one! |

Yes. It's easy to see by simply reading your post that you are a highly educated individual. Congratulations on your ability to milk the system. It's blindingly obvious the money is going to a most noble candidate.

Im sure that car is worth more to you than it is to anyone else. It is a custom car done to YOUR tastes, IMHO cars that are restored to OG bring a much better price than the "custom" cars unless you are talking rare(split/heb/BD)
I think you will be very surprised at what people wouldnt pay for the car even though it is built well. |

Very nice ride dude! I wouldn't have any idea what it's worth. Custom stuff is usually hard to pinpoint.
Is it lowered any? What size wheels/tires? |

I agree, and that is the problem. Obviously I don't want to give it away because that would suck in two ways. One, I'd always regret it, and two, it wouldn't serve the purpose of paying off enough of my education to make it worth it. I guess I'm banking on the buyer who sees it and just "has to have it". Not very likely I'm afraid. Honestly I was thinking of starting around $18,500 and going from there. Maybe I'm crazy, who knows.

Lowered 2.5 inches in the front with CB Performance dropped spindles and lowered in the rear a bit by changing the spring plates a few splines. |

As Mike said looks well built but I don't think it will command the type of money you want/need. If I had an $18,500 budget to spend on a vw I would be looking for something more stock/original or in the pre '57 bug era. You could always put it on EBAY or take it to one of the auction houses. That will give you a good idea of its value.
Out of curiosity, what school are you going to attend? How much is school going to cost you? Have you looked into finding a job while attending school? One that will pay most of your expenses?
Good Luck! |

I thought ebay might be a way to at least see what people are willing to bid. I could set my reserve and if I get it... great, and if I don't I'll still know how much someone would be willing to pay.
I'm going to LeTourneau University in a working adults program. I work a full time job and have a wife, two kids, a mortgage and all that stuff. School is going to cost about $25K by my best estimates. |

I'm another of the millions. Not my first car, but my first bug, a '72 European Spec Super that I let go because I needed money for school... That thing was so solid, such a nice driver.
My suggestion is to keep it if you can. As others have pointed out, custom cars are difficult to pinpoint for value. If this one is built just for you don't let it get away! |
