How important is a starter bushing in a stock 1600 dual port? Are they difficult to remove and replace?

Just use a SR17X "Autostick" starter which doesn't use the bushing.

Its vary important.... It stabilizes end of starter shaft.... Without bushing or having a severely warm bushing it will allow armature of starter rub on field coils inside starter housing and grind its self to a point it fails. Also chews on teeth of flywheel.

Bushing is easy to change...

If you are NOT inclined to change bushing or fool with it, Use above mentioned SR17x starter... Its for the auto-trans application but works very well in any 12volt application and has a "self supported" shaft. Also a little mor HP to spin up motor. Kind of a poor mans high torque starter.
