Can anyone recommend the best method for installing and removing the rear axle nuts on a Bug setup with Porsche pattern drums or discs with pressed in studs?

Take the rim off, pull out the cotter pin and use an impact gun.

My rear rotors still have the holes of the original 4 lug pattern. I screw in a stock wheel bolt into one of those unused holes and wedge a piece of steel bar stock between it and the snout of the rotor. That way if I bugger up the hole, no big deal. If your rotors don't have the VW 4 bolt pattern, you could drill and tap a single hole to do the job.

You could find a piece of bar stock and drill 2 holes in it that line up with 2 studs. Slip it over the studs and install 2 steel lug nuts TIGHT. That will hold the rotor/drum while you unscrew the nut.

Doesn't work on 5x130

Get someone to put a foot on the brake pedal. Get your 3/4 drive soclet on a breaker bar, toss on some extra pipe for leverage... It will come off.

If your brakes are apart - no idea. Put the rims on and find a way to keep them from turning.

i used a compressor and it had no problems getting the axle nut off. you can easily hold the brake drum from spinning by hand. having someone step on the brakes might work too.
