View original topic: Steps to refurbish a set of smoothies?

I have a nice set of smoothies that were painted blue and have a little bit of surface rust. What can I do to really clean these up? I was thinking after cleaning them I would use masterseries silver on them and then coat them with Masterseries AG111 Black paint. Thoughts?

I just don't know the best way to get the rust and the OG paint off.

Use chemical Paint stripper to get the paint off, then use Rust mort to kill the rust off. Prime then paint.
Hope that helps.

Sounds good I will give it a shot. Is there anything that should NOT be used on the wheels?

Pressure wash them after stripping or the chemical residue may reappear @ the seams a month or so after they are painted...Then you might have to re do the whole job again.

I yanked the steelies off my Thing for repaint. Has any body used a wire brush attachment to a grinder? Or would that be redundant to the chem-strip? I took the steelies to have checked for balance/bent check before I waste my time on a shitty wheel first. Also....What type of primer would be preferable. Rattle-can dupont is OK?

These wheels are layered with paint. Straight though.

My husband sadblasted ours then primered they turn out fine.

Metal etching primer would be the best first coat.
