View original topic: Spacers with JGE Raders on ealry drums?

Hey guys, i really wanted to run these repop JGE raders on my '56 oval, but was told that i need to use a spacer to clear the drum. i'd rather not use spacers for a number of reasons, one of which is that it kind of defeats the purpose of my 4 inch narrowed beam.

do i really need to use spacers? will i need them on the front and back? or will a repop empi 5 spoke result in a norrower stance up front? i know the rader is 5" wide and the empi's are 5.5" wide, but i don't know their offsets... (i think the empi will fit without a spacer)...

any help would be appreciated, as i am kind of a newbie... thanks... :?

The Empis will work fine no mods,

Im pretty sure the reason for the spacer is to let the wheel clear the "large" dust cap.

Just a thought, you should try to return the 4" beam , Get a 6" beam, buy the Raders & a set of disk brakes. That would be sweet. :D

Just change the front drums to later 58-65 ones.

thanks guys, i've considered all of those options... converting to discs, getting a more narrowed beam and updating the drums... i really should have just gone with a 6" beam... :(

killerwatt, can i just change the drum out, will it match the 56 backing plate, or wil i have to change out the backing plate and entire brake assembly?

I could be wrong of course, but I think it's just the drum

that would be easy, thanks erik

I was wrong

You'll need to change backingplates, cylinders, shoes, springs and the drums.

Yep.
The best place to find all that is from someone that just switched to disks.

JGE Rader`s on 58-65 drums need spacers too

You can have the lip on your drum machined down a bit to give you enough clearance. I had the same issue with my 59 SC. This is a bus drum cut for empis but the process is the same.

What about 66 drums? Im kinda new to the VW's, so I don't know the all the in's and out's of all the years, just the basics.

yeah, i heard the same thing... 66 and 67's it fits ok without spacers... but since i am the newbie asking all the questions, i would take that with a grain of salt!!!
