The milage is calculated by google maps and my wifes contour odo.
ansd no the car is not running lean I've checked with a wide band o2 sensor to get a true fuelratio .
Plus I forgot to mention I rebuilt the motor and balenced every thing
the carbs were adjustes with a unisyn and wideband o2 and vaccume gauge to get optiimum reading .
Sounds like you don't actually have an odometer in your car. Correct? If so, I think your calculations are very rough estimates at best and are likely way off. |

My odometer does work and I just used mt wifes car to confirm milage .
shedrove out to my work sat and checked with her trip odo .
no I did not guestimate the milage. |

your numbers are very round.
Did you plan to pull into a gas station right at 300 miles
and plan to (at the same time) fill the tank completely?
39 miles to the gallon isn't happening. |

Might be cheaper to call a tow truck to drag you around.
I get just over 28 if I'm kinda careful. Not all highway though. |

| I averaged 33 mpg for the round trip to the Invasion with my stock 1600cc FI 69 fastback. Those miles were by my GPS, and not by the speedometer. |

with a tool bag in the frunk and the racks loaded down as you see here I get 23 miles to the gallon on the interstate cruising 62.5-67 miles an hour and the car needs a tune up.
and the green coleman cooler up front had a dozen or so waters, soda and filled with ice. |

Back around 1979, I drove my stock 1500 Notch with the sidedraft carb from Orange County up Hwy 395 to Lone Pine near Mt. Whitney. I got 34.9 mpg on that tankful. The car accelerated from 0-60 in 20 seconds.
After I upped the displacement to 1678 with 7.3 CR and 32PDSIT carbs in 1999, my 0-60 time went down to 15 seconds but the best mpg on a highway trip is only 26 mpg. California gas does not have as much available energy as it did 30 years ago.
Hot VWs has an ongoing Project Mileage Motor series that they add an article to occasionally. The best mileage they got in their 1745cc Beetle with stock 85.5mm pistons and a 76mm stroker crank is 36.56 mpg. This car also does the 1/4-mile in mid-15s at 86mph.
I also find it hard to believe someone can get 39 mpg. |

It depends who drives it.... Im talking about a 1973 squaerback with 1600CC dual solex carbs. When my dad, the expert, drives it ... & he says he still needs to clean the engine out... it does about 28 MPG .... But it gets down to 21/23 uphill because the valve thingies arent clean there;s carbon on it from all times...
When i drive it i get a clean 25 mpg which is not bad at all ... i drive sleek without over reving the engine...
But when my brother AKA Vw Satan drives it ... it's like he's kicking the fuel out of it! That';s why im not letting him anywhere near my square... He'll have to stick to his stupid Super beetle :P |

I have done a trip on my type 3 with 27 mpg
that is a 2258 type 4 with 914 gearbox
and the gas was 30% e85 and 70% 95 octan (ron)
and the car can do 0-60 at 6-7 sec. |

This does not surprise me at all, there was an article posted up here not too long ago with a 4 cyl Nova Vs a 69 fasty. The fast got up to as high as 41 mpg! |
