I am starting a build with my Son for his first car.
A little history on this car:

I used to work for Trackside photo in the late 80's
www.tracksidephoto.com
They have been the premier off road racing photography agency since 1970
I used to drive this baja bug out in the desert to get to photo spots.
I purchased this car from Jim in 91.
I decided to make a class 51600 race car out of it and proceeded to cut it up further to make this happen.
Well as fate would have it my wife got pregnant with twins, boy and girl Jacob and Amanda.

This project got put on hold.
A couple more kids later then divorce in 2002 delayed this even more.

I have decided that modern 51600 cars being what they are today this car will never be as good as the ones racing today so the car has sat all this time.
I just sold my class 12 car to make room in the garage for Jakes car.

We have rolled the car in and placed it on the table.
We are gathering parts and are now ready to start our build
I apologize for the crappy camera phone pics and promise that the next update will have better photos.

I am going to have loads of questions in the coming months and look forward to documenting this process for Jake, having a great time hanging out with him in the garage, teaching him to take pride and care with his cars, and putting a piece of off road history back on the road.

So it starts

The motor will be a motor that I used in the race car before we moved to class 12.

Built by Wayne Laird at A&D Buggies in Torrance Ca.
Tranny is down at Transmissions West in Torrance
We have acquired a cromo 4 inch over beam Which can be seen in the photo of the front. we have ordered the cromo 1 inch over arms and combo spindles from Empi.
I have 2 old Bilstien 12 inch coilover shocks left over from the race car.
Which leads me to my first question

Does anybody have any spring rate ideas?

Here are the first photos....Boy do we have a lot of work ahead

Still waiting on parts but I found out I can pick up the arms and spindles tomorrow!

Jake has been busting at the seams to do stuff so I got some paint stripper and cut him loose.
We are going to paint it the same desert tan color to keep the car as original as possible, but the old stuff needs to go

We used Citristrip from Home Depot.
It takes 2 layers off very well and has a nice orange scent.
So we need to do it twice
