View original topic: What year engine is this?
6Speed Wed Jan 02, 2008 11:06 am

So I just put this motor in my 64 bug. I know it runs, and that's the important part. However, I am confused about what year motor this is. The stamp on the block indicates a 1965, correct?

However, the intake manifold is different, and I am still new to these cars (even though I've been trying to restore this thing for 4 years  ), and I don't know what year that manifold started in, or what heads match that manifold (dual port?).

Please ignore the rainbow of wires. It's temporary to get things running.

Also, is this fuel pump rebuildable?

Thanks!

It's an F case which was 1300 CC 66 year model BUT

It has been rebuilt into a Dual port 1600 based engine....

Agree with Keifer; better put your hoses back on the fan shroud or you'll burn up the engine...and add your air cleaner....

Thanks for the quick replies!

Happy New Year Boys, Did you miss me? Case serial numbers are meaningless as someone could have used anything from 83mm,85.5,87,or even those nice 88 slip ins.. :D

Several weeks ago I mentioned how to use a 40hp case and make it a 1600 or better but if all you do is read serial numbers yer screwed.. Sold another VW this place rocks thank Ev.

F-0 was a 67 1500 1.5 lt motor, not a 1300, it has obviously been upgraded, and as keith stated, who knows what size it is.

OK, I am confused with the engine code chart. It starts off with a number, then in later years goes to a letter, then numbers?I have a 1958 with an apparent european 40hp circa 1966,but I am not sure.It has a removable generator stand and the engine block #s are as follows; D 247564x.The x denotes a factory rebuild,I think. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The "D" case is a Euro spec case and AFAIK is not a production year model 66 case.... *but I might be mistaken

in the USA 40 HP were pre letter codes

Thanks! So what year is my engine and what size? Again, those numbers are D 247564 x. Thanks!

Not sure about the year your case could be. And the only way to know for sure what the CC's are is to tear into the engine and see.

A pic might help identify it further though.

D blocks were 1200s produced after they stopped selling them in the US, but were used in other markets for years afterwards. The D 267564 would have been from 1968. However the X means it was factory refurbished and it really could be anything now.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help. I kinda figured it was a European rebuilt, just was not sure on the size.It is in my 1958 Beetle, who I purchased from the original owner. She bought it new and had to have the engine rebuilt when they were on vacation in New Mexico back in 1978.Apparently,the shop had one of these 40hp engines either sitting on the shelf or from another supplier at the time.Isn't the history of a VW's time on earth great? Thanks again for the help!

keifernet Fri Jan 04, 2008 10:04 am

If it has the 40 hp style intake and heads then it's probably the stock 1200... or it could have the big bore 40 hp pistons and be a bit more cc's

Also the information Andy (glutamodo) posted in this thread will be of interest to you.
