Im just glad I had the part to fix it with.
I hate a car I cant drive!
If the engine I am collecting parts for comes together I will not be afraid of the interstate anymore. |

I resharpened the fuel tap gasket die tonight and stamped a few out. I am really happy with the results. The fit in the fuel tap is perfect. :D

Just a comment on the choice of Viton vs Buna (Nitrile). I used to work with a pump manufacturer/supplier and I asked my manager why Viton wasn't used as a hose material in peristaltic pumps - and he told me that the viton crumbles under repeated deformation.
Both Viton and Buna are fine for use with hydrocarbons. (Don't use 'standard' EPDM, some of the later EPDMs can take hydrocarbons)
Just something to watch out for - I expect that a fuel tap isn't going to be a highly used component, but if you find it starts to break up then maybe try Buna. |

Hey Volumex,
Thanks for the information. I made these out of Buna.

Ok, I would like to get some opinions. Maybe I am being too impatient on the rims that I wanted to get for my beetle. I wanted to make a set of (5) and get them power coated but other then one lead, that hasn't responded to me emails in weeks, I have had no response what so ever. I have a WTB ad and also one in my signature. Is it unrealistic to think that I will get the rims?
Thanks,

I finally got to get some work done on my master cylinder this week. I sleeved the master with stainless steel even though it is hard to tell by the pic. I shouldn't have to worry about that for awhile. A fellow Samba member was aslo kind enough to send me an NOS piston but it turned out to be too long and the seal area wasn't the same. So I made me one on my lunch break today. I also had previously purchased an NOS master cylinder seal kit. I hope to have some brakes sometime this week. :D Thanks to John and Bill for the parts.

Nice Work Joey, I cant believe you just "made" a brake cylinder piston on lunch break! thats awesome, I could also use an early fuel tap rebuild kit or two for the 8mm kind with the nasty set screw on the side, another nice tool you made there for stamping out the seals, I have a Hazet tool for adjusting the early fuel tap but no one has the early square seals,
the difference in the brake pistons may be due to differences between ATE and Schaffer master cylinders? I see the early master cylinder didnt have a manufacturers name on it |

Hey Bill, thanks. I had previously taken measurements on the piston and I already had a good idea of the steps it was going to take to make it. Just a matter of making chips at that point. Shoot me an email and we will talk about the fuel taps.
Yeah, the only thing that I saw on the master cylinder was a "19". Couldn't see much else when I got it either.

Ok, I think that I have finally got all my brake stuff together.
I purchased an aluminum reservoir that was only supposed to have some scaring where the strainer nut had been tightened down. Well when I got it there had been some repair work/welding done to it. It wasn't too bad but it would have leaked around the nut. So I decided to cut the bottom off and replace it. This is where it gets fun. When I was cutting the bottom off in the lathe the tool dug in and mangled up the reservoir like a Coke can. I was pissed at myself and was ready to chunk it in the trash. Sorry I didn't take any pics of it like that. After thinking about how hard of a time I had just getting this one I decided to fix it anyway. The bottom part of the tool that I made was used to reform the body of the reservoir and to fix the gash that I created in the side. The top part of the tool is a forming die that I made to form the new bottom. It would have been easier for me to just make a flat bottom but I can get really anal about things so I made it with the appropriate radius. Our welder here is without guestion one of the best there is. Not a singe burn hole and great penetration. Cleaned up real nice too. Well hopefully I will get my brakes together this holiday weekend and give it a test drive.

Yes it is TIG welded. The body is 1mm(.04") thick and I made the bottom 1.5mm(.06") to be a little more rigid. He sure can make my crappy machine work look good can't he?

Joey, as usual your skills are superb. Keep up the good work man....
You mentioned a few posts ago about making some wheels??? What are your thoughts? I'm still searching for those too :D |

Joey check out this thread. i think i remember you saying you did not have a 25hp engine with your car and this might be what you need. if i looked it up right it is a september 53 engine. if you already have one this could be a spare.

Hey Matthew,
Thanks for looking out after me man but I just missed out on the motor. If I am correct the motors proceeded the cars within a month? If so that would have fallen right into the window to be a correct engine for my Oct. 15th car. I'll keep looking.
Thanks again. |

You have some talent. I will be watching closely. Maybe Laura and I can swing by one weekend and check it out. Give the fam my best.
