Waiting on the call buddy.

Well the Oval made a half dozen trips around the neighborhood this evening. :D :D :D Man that felt good. The motor seems strong but I never got out of second gear so I will still have to see how the transmission is. The clutch felt good. Boy the brakes sure don't stop as well as the Golf. Thanks alot for the help this evening Steve.

We should have ended the evening on that high note but I wanted to replace the rear window seal. I had a WW seal and we could not get the window back in. I know that this has been covered a bunch of times and if I search I could find it but has anybody got any tips on the proper/best way to replace the rear window? I messed up the seal so I will have to get another. Is WW seal good to use?

Thanks,

Joey

Joey,
how were you going about trying to install the window? yes WWest seals are good to use. the way i have always done it is

1 install the chrome strip into the rubber
2 install the seal around the window
3 install a piece of string or small insulated wire (have used speaker wire before) into the seal all the way around in the area that the metal lip in the body will eventually go into
4 sit the window in the opening and have someone push inward while you start pulling the string on one side making the lip of the seal pop over the metal lip of the body keeping constant pressure on the window so it does not pop back out
5 if doing a windshield be very carefull as they break alot easier :D (dont ask me how i know this 4 times  )

We were lapping the lower part of the inner rubber lip over the pinchweld and using the cord to pull it the rest of the way around.
The rubber mounted on the glass would not fit into the opening far enough to let the inner lip grap the metal.
It was as if the rubber was too fat,
I have done dozens of Brit and American windows before ,first beetle.
First time with WW product.
It was cool seeing it put around for the first time in years.
She needs a pittman arm in the worst way!
Im sure Joey could make one for her faster than ordering a new one.
Looks like a beam rebuild will be coming soon.
had fun last night working on the 53,call me when that new gasket comes in.

67 Shane Thu May 29, 2008 4:42 am

First drive is great isnt it. Congrats on getting it moving. If anyone can rebuild this thing its you. No your not too much older than me Joey. Those windows are a bitch to put in but it sounds like your doing it right. The string or wire in the groove and some liquid dish soap helps. I did my windows and cut five years off my life in aggrivation. WW is great with their seals.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE GLASS IN THE GLASS GROOVE AND THE MOLDING IN THE MOLDING GROOVE, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!

(See thebugshop.org for my anguish in this area.....!)

Thanks guys,

We'll give it another try next week when my new seal comes in. I am still really stoked about driving it last night. I want to get it up to speed now and see how it is. Still more stuff to do though. Need new tires as it still just has the roller tires on it. I know the guys here at work are going to get tired of hearing me talk about it.

I want to get some advice from people. I need to replace the battery area of my pan but want to get the correct replacement. Who has the most accurate piece for this? I also need to replace my muffler and see that WW has one for $225 that was made in Denmark. Is this one suitable or should I search for an NOS one?

Thanks,

Joey

By the way I found (2) Lemmorez 15" beetle wheels stamped 3/53 but I think I will keep those and put them up with my 15 1964 Deck Lids. \:D/

Joey,

Nice talking to you today. Here's what I was working on. When you get this far, this is what your pan will look like. I spent all morning scraping the undercoating off, the soda blaster didn't want to deal with it.... or at least he did for a large fee..... I saved the money for something else!

From an October 53 oval, just like yours.... save them if you can! I'll need to do some minor bodywork on it but nothing too terrible.....

scvw Sat May 31, 2008 8:44 pm

The pics of the pan look good. Does the first pic of the bottom of the pan still have the undercoating on it? It looks like you won't have to replace the battery tray.

What I did and didn't accomplish today.

I made a new cork gasket for my gas cap, which is metal and not aluminum by the way and has the script writing on the bottom.

I replaced the Jokon side lights today with the semaphores that I have. I had to remove/solder/replace the wiring to the drivers side semaphore. Damn rat chewed the wires in two up inside the window pillar. I checked the voltage before connecting the semaphre and was getting just shy of 6volts but when I hooked up the semaphores I get 3.9 volts on both sides checking off the bottom terminal. I assume that I have the wires in the correct positons, heavy wire connected to the bottom terminal. The semaphores light up but the will not pop up on their own.

I also was getting 5.9 volts to the interior dome light but couldn't get it to light up. I think that the problem with it is that the contacts need to be cleaned. I will do that tomorrow.

So, not too bad of a day. Any advice and/or suggestions on the semaphores would be greatly appriciated.

Joey

I'll ask someone in the know tomorrow at Pomona, I haven't gotten far enough (obviously) to be dealing with electrical issues yet :D

That bottom shot is after all of the undercoating was heated and scraped away. You're correct about the battery tray, no need to replace it. I'll have some minor welding and hammer and dolly work, but other than that it's blast it, primer, then paint with single stage. No powder coat on this car.... 8)

scvw Mon Jun 16, 2008 2:50 pm

I have done a few minor things to the Oval within the last week. Finally got the rear window seal replaced after finding out that we were putting in the first seal wrong. I drove it up the road a few miles just to see how the transmission was and it along with the clutch worked flawlessly. :D The muffler disentagrated more then it was so I am hoping to get an NOS one soon. I have a wanted ad up but haven't had any replies yet so if anybody can help me out with getting one I would really appreciate it. I would be glad to trade a set of the VW tools that I make towards one.

Thanks,

Joey

Joey your stuff looks great! I wish I had that kind of talent!!

scvw Sat Jun 21, 2008 1:18 pm

I took the old muffler off today in anticipation of the new one arriving the end on this week. While I had the crank start tin out I wanted to see if anybody might know what year this is. The motor is a Nov. 54 36 hp if that helps. I also was curious what the numbers were that are stamped on the passenger side of the generator stand. I will try to get pics of that later tonight. Thanks for any help.
Joey

scvw Sat Jun 21, 2008 4:05 pm

Here are the numbers stamped on the right hand side of the generator stand along with some intitials, KD. Was this motor rebuilt at sometime?

EverettB Sat Jun 21, 2008 4:17 pm

The crank tin is 36hp. Used on Buses, 1955-1959.
