Hey Ray,

There should be some kits available soon, I think.

I wish that my 53 had a hole in the roof like yours. Post up some pics of it when you get a chance. Stay safe.

Ok, I am going to call a few friends and ask them also but I wanted to get some more expert opinions. I started the Oval just now and it was warming up fine and then it started running very rough. I shut it down and made sure that the motor still turned over. No problem there. I then popped the valve covers off and the passenger side looked good but the drivers side looked like this. It appears that the valve is sticking. I can pop it back out with a screwdriver but when I turn the motor over by hand it sticks again. What is this a sign of and how can I fix it.

MODIFIER Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:32 pm

mine did that when I first started running it.
the valve was sticking in the guide from a rusty stem.
also could be more serious,as in a dislodged seat but much less probable.
I took the rocker assy off and popped the valve with a brass hammer a few times and it never did it again.
( that thing on the southern connector was on the other side of the engine and has yet to reveal what it was.)

Big pimp'n at the Anderson, SC car show. Actually did it for the close in parking. Met some cool VW people who let Modifier and me park with them.

Inaugural drive after 30+ years of sitting - 280km. That's 174 miles for you yanks.

Looks like Tampa, Fl and the Bulli Brigade/Bug Jam weekend is next up in my sites.

Looks great Joey... good work getting her rolling. Now you can enjoy driving her while you fix odds and ends. It's tough having a car apart with no fun :D Or 2 cars apart with no fun :D :D

Hey Sinbad, man that is a beautiful car. I would like to see more pics when you get a chance.

My better judgment tells me that this isn't normal. I went to grease my front beam and link pins this morning and this is what I saw.

meredith murray Sat Sep 06, 2008 8:16 pm

It looks like your shock shot it's load.....of grease

Of course grease will ooze out of places when you fill up your beam, was this picture first thing or after you pumped in your grease?

56OvalRHD Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:02 pm

Joey,

The shock blew it's wad :D or the rubber bushing liquified?

Odd, but you definitely wouldn't get grease there from pumping your zerks on your front end.

You are on the road brother, it's down hill from here :-)

scvw Sun Sep 07, 2008 2:39 am

You both are sick people. It was the rubber bushing that liquified and this was dangling down. I have all four shocks on the way so I will be curious how many noises disappear and how much the ride may improve. I also was thinking about replacing the rear torsion housing bushings. Has anybody done this before and is it very involved?

Sinbad Sun Sep 07, 2008 6:04 am

Changing those bushes is a piece of cake for a man of your calibre .Spray the bolts with some kind of penetrating fluid before you start(leave over night) and most of the workshop manuals or the samba will guide you through it.

I will post some photos of my 53 for you when the rain lets up.

Thanks Rich and you are right, that is what it's all about.

I have posted here what it has taken me to get the car to this point of now being able to enjoy it. Not only personally but with my family also. Here is a quick story that my 11 year old daughter told the other day. My wife, daughter and myself were going shopping in the beetle in a very congested area. She told us "You know, other VW people will realize what a special car this is but most people will just think that were poor." I got a good chuckle out of that one.

What until I get a chance to organize all the history that I have been able to compile on the car. Very cool story.
