Made a little progress today. Got the gas tank out and disassembled the fuel tap. I will take the tank to a local radiator shop to have it cleaned before I seal it. Has anybody rebuilt a fuel tap before? Got any tips?
I think that I will replace that fuel line.
I love that tank.
I was suprised that the brake reservoir still had fluid in it. Good sign?
Got the fuel tap moslty disassembled. Still have to get the fuel filter off, any tips, and the long fuel rod fell out. Has anybody replaced the rods before? Got any tips?
Thanks,

Great work you're doing there! I rebuilt my fuel tap completely, disassembled everything, cleaned and polished things, drilled out the little copper lines and replaced them with new ones. The rubber sealings I made myself out of a new rubber mat.

You may need a special tool for opening the cover of operating lever. I made that tool from an old piston pin. Ground suitable heads which fits to the grooves of the cover.
Gaskets are available also by spare part deliverers.
The filter has a screw fitting. |

Thanks for the reply Michel. By what method did you reattach the copper tubes?

Do you have a picture of the tool that you made? I suppose it is threaded and screws out?
Thanks for the help.

Here, it's very simple tool for opening the cap. Piston pin is good material.

Hello,
I just drilled the holes out and made a very tight fit for the new copper lines, I punched them very gently in with a hammer, and they wont come out any more!
Good luck with the rebuilt!!!

| And for the lines, you can also use a drop of locking compound to secure them. |

Got the fuel tap disassembled and cleaned up today.
What is the 5mm tapped hole for in this pic? I had to drill the screw out because I couldn't get it removed.
Here is the tool that I made to remove the spring loaded nut hold in the fuel reserve actuator.
Any little progress is a step forward, right?

It was inferred in a previous post, but rubber disc seals for those taps are not available as repros. They are different from the later taps, and different from the Porsche 356 taps also.
You can get EPDM rubber sheet at mcmaster.com and cut it to the right size. A hole punch works best to make the holes. |

Hey John,
Thanks for the info. Where can I get the pattern to know what to cut and where to punch the holes. How thick is the rubber? Is that post here in the Oval forum? We order from McMaster almost everyday and I have a hole punch here at work. |

Knew your or someone would ask that. I don;t know. I have a couple NOS taps at home, I supposed I could take one apart and see. I think the rubber is about 3mm, 1/8" would do. Make sure you get an EPDM that is fuel and oil resistant, maybe even test it in a jar with gas for a bit. Some of it will swell quite a bit over a day or two. |

Actually in Austria is available repro rectangular seals for older type tap.

This guy has no email, just fax or letter.
Seal for tap is part number "10 209 113" for 4 euros, and seal for filter housing "10 209 129" for 2 eur. |

I hope that I am not boring you all with my pics.
I couldn't find any suitable replacement fuel tap tubes so I just made my own. The short piece is the fuel tap stop.
Got these today, thanks Eric. I know that it is debatable if these would be correct for a Sept. 53 Oval but I will roll them untill I can get some grooved/ribbed ones.
