I recently baught a stock 71 convertible "super." Before I got the little car I knew it had rust but I THOUGHT it wasn't bad, when I got it home I waxed the shit out of it, cleaned the top and it looked decent. Then I wanted some wheels on it so I baught some empi 8 spoke wheels at the local auto fair for $125 (all 4),thenn it was to HIGH so i lowered it. I liked my bug and it turned alot of heads, but I noticed while I jacked the car up the shop floor FILLED with rust from how weak the car was, and so I was going to drive it the way it was until winter so it would be my "WINTER PROJECT."
Well it turned winter and I started my restoration, put it on jack stands I found out that it was hit in the front and rear (bad) then I took the running boards off and there was no metal behind them all rusted out (bader). After that my neighbor came over to see what I was doing so while we were talking I sat on the rear bumper and I heard metal scraping and hitting so i went inside the car and striped the carpet come to find out there were rust holes the size of my fist from the fender wells to the battey tray which the PO hid with bondo did very good job and so the noise I was hearing was the door jams hittind together which means the car was about to fall apart (badest). So all this damage was TO bad to fix, I came to a stand still, and remember THATS WHAT YOU GET FOR THINKING and always take the time to check the car before you by it

the only good thing I got out of that POS is one of those cool VW couches lol

Looks a little rough, but really, for a vert that isnt bad.

Other than the rear crossmember rot, the rest is definately typical.

It doesnt look real bad, Im used to much worse here in Michigan. I picked up the Bug-Me videos on floor pan replacement and Heaterchannel/rear quarter panel replacement when I first started restoring Bugs and They are really great. It helps give you a better understanding of how these cars are put together. Stick with it and you'll have yourself a really nice 'Vert

I plan on slamming this one Sam!! along with black under the molding, and I just got the stock wheels powder coated black, new chrome hubs, and white walls (or the epmi 8 spokes what do you think will look better). I put road signs over the floor and black & white checkered flag cloth as my door panels I will try to get pics of it and the couch soon. Ohhh yea this car was baught NEW from the PO!!!
