So i bought the 1 piece cot poles as well for my 79 without reading up fully first. DOH!!

Anyway, if i were to move the brackets up i take it they should then be able to fit fit the shorter one piece poles in?

I was going to cut and reweld them longer BUT as they are galvanised i dont really fancy doing that!!

Yes. Like an inch or two. Maybe take some measurements from an earlier Westfalia before you commit.

cut and weld or move the brackets?

You may find if you move the brackets up, the useable space will diminish significantly.

How is the usable space different between a 77 and a 68?

EZ Gruv Mon Aug 09, 2010 1:19 pm

I have no idea.
However, it stands to reason that if someone with a '79 bus, like pkrboo, moves the brackets up, the only result would be less space between the cot and the headliner.

True but isnt that a mood point if the goal is to be able to use a common short style of cot? The telescoping ones are hard to find. I know, I just went through it all. So my point is that if you move it up it will have the same room as a 68  If its good enough for a 68 then its good for a 79  Besides we a talking like 1-2 inches up not 6 or 8  Not a big deal for a 7 year old or the dog.

Well, first of all, it would be a moot point, not a mood point (unless you're feeling cranky)
If it were 'good enough' in 1968, VW probably wouldn't have move it down to make it better in the later years.

Thats all you got. Next you should advise that people with early bays move their cots down for fear that they are missing out one vast amounts of room

Its like slowing down to have a look at a fender bender

So far, it was a fender bender worth looking at. This explains the extra half moon holes drilled in my parts bus. And, I learned there are variable cot rods! Now I have to go see what kind are out there. Thanks for the discussion!

Well good luck to you sir. this seems to be a popular question as of late. Ive had to speak and have been asked by several others off forum about just this topic.

Might be late to the party with this, but Bus Depot sells a complete childs cot. I have a '72 westy and all I needed was the canvas original poles were still in hand. The description outlines what mods need to be made for 69-72, otherwise the poles they send should fit 73-79 stock brackets. I'll give anyone the 2 poles (they're the 57 1/4" one piece) that came with the replacement cot for the cost of shipping. PM me if interested.

"Description: White canvas, Includes Poles. Requires brackets on door pillars; order part # 211158, or use existing brackets if you have a '69-79 Westfalia. (On '69-72 Westy you'll have to raise the existing brackets slightly.) Can also be used with original Westfalia poles as a replacement canvas."
