| Another shift of the thread. Almost weekly I have someone offer to buy my Westy. It isn't anywhere near pristine, but alot of young people seem to like them and alot of middle aged guys like me seem to like them. I got stopped at a bluegrass festival by a lady who said " I know this request is strange, but may I smell the inside of your bus?" I knew just what she meant. VW's have a unique smell to them and for some of us it brings back good memories. If someone else doesn't like my bay that is okay, but there sure seems to be many who do like it. 8) |

Yeah, no other car smells like a VW , bug or other wise. I've had so many it would seem strange not to have the odor. Many people, friends included wonder why I like these cars so much. But to touch on the kids touching issue, at a show a kid messed with my dash and this was the result.

I've avoiding responding long enough, time for my two cents.
We (humans) are creatures of immeasurable creativity. We are the masters of creating contests that we will win. One such contest is "My (insert item here) is better than yours". To counter, we create the "my (insert item here) is worse than yours". I like to tell people who look at my bus with curiosity that it has none of the disadvantages of heat, power, air conditioning, power windows, handling.... they are all inconveniences that I do not have to deal with. <insert smile here while waiting for them to figure out the joke>
So some of us like to leave others out of our special clubs in order to create some sort of artificial identity. Splitties. No, Bays only. No, Water pumpers rule. Syncros only. Take your pick.
And where the nuance gets more difficult is when we all try to explain our motivations for this behavior. Bottom line, we do it because we are human, and we are unique individual flowers just like everybody else.
I like to look at the VW community as a group of independent thinkers, a curious mix of restorers, people who march to the beat of a different drum. Weird, but not too weird. We are both rugged individualists and suburban conformists, all in one.
All I know is that if you are driving on the road, and you wave to me, I'll wave back. If you need parts, and I have spares, I'll give or sell at a reasonable price. If you are broken down, I'll try to help fix, and if you camp, I'll share my food. I don't care what you are driving, I care that you are driving with me.
It's a short time on a long road, and it is interesting enough without conflict. I see no reason to sow the seeds of discord, we already have enough of that in the world. So enjoy your drive and leave as little crap behind you as you can.
Your car is your metaphor. Keep it tuned. Take it out once in a while. Fix what you need to, use what you have. Be nice, and use your turn signals. Good brakes are a necessity. You can go faster, but it's going to cost ya. Don't be afraid to push it a little once in a while, but when lots of people are around, best to be careful around them.
See you on the road. Or not.

Yeah man, you got us hanging now....
As to touching:
They make those little plastic chains pretty cheap, 50 feet and 4 posts and you got a cheap insurance policy. :) |

Not a "he" ? A "she" then ? She spilled her soda on your dash and it created a short...? |
