Hi,

I've found a manufacturer in the UK (Ricky Evans Motorsport) who will make a batch of heated front screens for the Karmann Ghia.
http://www.heatedwindscreen.com/index.html

Price would be £165 sterling + delivery. Not bad considering that a standard front screen is about £100 sterling anyway.

It takes the manufacturer around 8 weeks from date of order to make them. I have no affiliation with the company. I just want a heated screen and a group buy is the only way.

If you want your name put down for one, please register your interest on this thread. If we get enough people (10 required), we can each send our deposits to the manufacturer and he can start making them.

As people confirm that they want in on this, I will edit this post with people's names.

17 Screens have been ordered (for the following people)
Total screens confirmed so far = 18
Deposits received = 18

More info received from the manufacturer this evening......

Quote: Dear David

All heated windscreens are made the same, the micro wires are inside the glass . If you need to see one just look a ford Mondeo or Focus most have them as standard . I will try and take a picture of them but they don’t usually show up as they are so fine .
Best Thing is to come and take a look at say Beetle screens we make for VW Heritage .
Best Regards

Rick

Is that price for the heated winscreeen only? What about the switch, wiring and relay, etc.? Also is it 12 or 6 volt? Just a few other things to contemplate. It IS an interesting idea and would solve a nagging problem. :)

Not to mention shipping charges.

Probably not bad if you are in the EU, I wouldn't take the chance on trying to get one across the ocean.

Its for the screen only. You can get the relay / switch /wiring locally pretty easily I think. Its 12 volt.

If you are wondering about shipping, please contact ME and I will ask on your behalf (Ricky prefers one point of contact)

This is from his website:

Not if you know how, we use state of the art packaging materials and on top of that we insure the glass ourselves so as long as you tell use on the day of delivery if there's a problem with breakages we will replace it immediately.

Update on shipping arrangements:

Quote: We only do the one screen which fits all the cars 1955 -74 the centre height should be 439 mm

I can ship them to each person at a cost of £40.00+vat

Or I can take them to one location ie a show somewhere for £50.00+vat

Cheers

Rick

I presume he means within the UK

I believe the UK and the US have different standards for the windscreen glass. This might be an issue here in the US.

If the height of the windscreen he's making is 439mm = 17.28 inches....he is making an early windscreen, 66.5 and earlier

For a late windscreen, that takes a seal where T-shaped trim is used, the windscreen should be 17 inches high, or 431.8mm

I've sent him another email asking him to clarify which seals to use with the screens he makes. Should have a reply tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

Dave,

Will you check shipping too - as he is in the UK and at least you and I are in Ireland. The prices he is quoting is most likely for UK. I have a funny feeling that we may encounter problems getting them shipped across due to the risk of breakage.

I'll check, but I think it'll be ok......he seems pretty confident about his packaging methods.

If the worst comes to the worst, I'll be driving over and back from Wales in a couple of months (getting married over there), so I could bring them back with me. But hopefully it won't come to that. 8)

Just an update on the situation as of today, Monday 14th Jan.......

Ricky Evans has asked that people direct any queries through myself. This way, he will not get confused about who he is dealing with.
He will not sell you a screen privately ; only as part of this group purchase
I can be contacted by pm on any of the forums, or email david at sum-it.biz , or you can text or phone me on ++353 877535282

The manufacturer has measured the tool used to make the screens, and the actual height is 432mm (exactly 17 inches). This means that it is the glass for later KGs (July 1966 – 1974). You will have to use the later style seals with the T-shape insert trim to get a proper fit. According to Rick, the 17 and a half inch screens (for early ghias) are not made anymore.

The screens are made from triplex laminated glass, with the 12 volt tungsten filament element sandwiched between the laminates. (practically invisible)

Someone had a query about the thickness of the screens. They will be 5.4mm thick. Original factory fitted screens were 5.8mm on late ghias, so the 5.4 is the nearest we can get.

As it stands, we have seven / possibly eight people interested, so we only need a few more.

I would be interested in a screen for my 70 coupe if I could get one shipped over the pond.

boat_builder Mon Jan 14, 2008 1:08 pm

I'll investigate that for you and get back to you. 8)

boat_builder Mon Jan 14, 2008 2:26 pm

DORIGTT, Rick says he needs your full address and area code. Please can you pm this to me and I'll pass it on to him.

Thanks,

David

Ghianightmare Mon Jan 14, 2008 3:40 pm

Dave,

Can you clarify whether the screen can be instaled on the earlier Ghias please? Is it just a case of using the later seal on the earlier model? :?

To clarify...

These screens can be used with ANY age of car from 1955 - 1974.

You will have to use the later type seals, no matter what year your car is. The window opening on all cars, 1955 - 1974 is exactly the same.

To fit the window you will need:
- The later "T" style aluminium inserts.
- The later rubber seal

Mike Gregory at House of Ghia in the USA does the proper quality seals and he'll know what you're talking about. Nice friendly fella to deal with too.

He reckons it could be around £140 sterling for the shipping to America.
This is based on the price he paid to ship a similar sized (landrover) windscreen over there last week.

£90 for shipping to Ireland, although he said he could put two screens into the one box for £90 (I'd rather do it that way if its ok with you)

Everything is insured, no matter where he sends it to. So long as any breakages are reported to him on the day of delivery, he will replace the screens.
