I have a 68 camper which is giving me clutch problems. Sometimes I can get it into gear and sometimes not, also I put it in first but it is actually 3rd.

The bus got stuck in reverse and would not start. I took off the coupling in the back and was able to get it into neutral and now it starts but still clutch problems. Is it the coupling or is it in the clutch?

I need to replace the main engine seal and am going to drop the engine, should I replace clutch parts??

Sounds like the shifter bushings... two in the middle of the whole mess can't be changed unless you pull the engine and the tranny (thanks VW!) but the one up front can be done and the cage of course is simple.....
Also loosening the 2 bolts on the shifter a bit till the base will just move and then put it in reverse and tighten it up. Thats a good place to start to help get the shift pattern lining up better...

I would go ahead and replace all the clutch parts and have the flywheel machined if it looks really glazed...

on the early release bearings I also would saftey wire the bearing to the release fork ( aka...cross shaft)... around the clips... and check the release fork and the bushings for the fork (in the tranny) for wear also... these things are getting so old you really have to look close at it all to cover your ass...

The Bowden tube is a source of misery to boot.... Hope this helps.... there is also another thread or 2 lucky420 and someone else just had the clutch experience.....
