View original topic: '81 Diesel Rabbit: Noise From Engine Compartment

Long story short my I need a backup car because I'm having some issues with my '82 AC Vanagon and need transportation while I fix it and my GF's '63 Bel Air is killing me on gas. I found a diesel Rabbit on Craigslist for $300, in the ad they say there's a strange noise coming from the engine compartment and the kid's Dad said he thought it was the water pump. I've never owned or worked on a diesel but I did a lot of work on Watercooled Mk1s and 2s, and I'm kind of kicking myself for giving away my Bently Bibles for those years now. What I'm wondering is if it is the water pump how much trouble am I looking at, and what are the odds that it's actually the fuel pump, which from what I hear is one of the most expensive parts to replace?

When I go check it out I'll do the old "Stick a jack handle or something on the potential offending part and take a listen" move to see if I can track it down, but being unfamiliar with diesels, what else should I be on the lookout for?

The water pump can be fairly easy or a mothe%6u^ker. Does it have AC or PS??? It is still doable just more work. Never heard of a injection pump making noise just leaking.

Myself for $300 go for it. Scrap is up to $108 a ton just down the street so it is just above scrap at that price.

Guy hasn't gotten back to me yet so he might have sold it. It's an '81 Manual, and I don't think they had power steering quite yet, I had an '80 Scirocco that didn't have power steering, I think that was an '82 up thing but I could be wrong. I picked up my Vanagon today and was talking to a mechanic at the shop and what he was saying is odds are it's a bad injector.
