Bummer that you can't pass emissions with the CEL lit up where you're at. That's kind of a bastard of of a trouble code. Yeah, there is no true camshaft position sensor. It's suppose to be the entire distributor, and I don't know what about it makes this come up. It's possible that if you replaced the timing belt that the timing marks aren't all lined up 100% correctly. I kept getting it on a 98 Jetta 2.0 last winter after doing the timing belt. I double checked the timing marks, which looked good to me, but I did make a tiny adjustment to the distributor position. After that, I think I got one further instance of that code, then it went away and did not resurface. Go figure. And, The car always ran just fine.

If you remove the bolt and clamp that holds the dist to the block, you will see there are two locating pins on the dist body. You can pull them out, and that will allow you to adjust the timming of the dist in the block. You might be able to adjust it enough to get the fault ot go away. If that doesn't work, you'll need a new dist.

if you only care about it passing emissions just get coilovers and slam the shit out of it. here they use a rubber wheel stop on a stick to see if you're high enough to clear the rollers.

ive passed like 5 cars that way, my 98 has a cel for an evap leak that doesnt exist. even went to my buddy's dealership and he dye tested it. so i slammed it, and pulled the cel bulb out of the cluster.

Maybe, maybe not. I've seen them both ways. The 98 I worked on didn't have them.

if i were to slam the car it wouldnt matter because im in the metro ATL area and since its a 96 and newer they just take a nice little obd2 hook up and plug it in and they can read everything from there they dont put the car on rollers unless its pre 96

yeah, here they still have to drive it over the rollers to get to the obd2 port scanner.... if the car cant get in, they'll waive it. my 98 passed that way, as well as my fiances 97, and pretty much everyone i know around here.
