| Between Thurs am and Fri am 3 fan belts broke or came off. It is a 1969 VW bus with a rebuilt engine. The advice I have received by laymen go from "wrong size" to "the 2 wheels have to be lined up one directly above the other", to "well the bus is a 69 but what year, model, etc. is the rebuilt engine". I am tryin to read my idiots book but somehow I think the beginning key might be what type, year, etc. the engine is. Any help heading me in the right direction would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Aso, is anyone familiar with the Shaffer Oil product? Change your oil once every 100,000 miles product. Answer direct OK to agypsygal@msn.com |

| I owned a '69 bus for many years and the engine is identical to the type 1's (Beetle), so any generator or alternater setup from the upright engine should work fine. Check for adequate tension...there should be about 3/8" (10 mm) deflection midway between the two pulleys if you are pressing firmly with your thumb. I would guess from your description that your belt is too tight, so you need to remove the upper pulley (half) and adjust the number of shims (always keep the spare shims on the outside of the pulley). If the pulleys are not lined up correctly, then you need to loosen the generator strap and push/pull slightly (make sure that the fan won't rub on the shroud) or else shim behind the pulley. I like to use Continental (Contitech) fan belts made in Germany. Good luck! |

Depending on who has done what to it over the years the "generator" on 68-71's from the factory is NOT the same as any other upright bug or Ghia...
They came from the factory with a 38 amp gen which is longer than the 30 amp... (also had a solid cast iron pulley instead of a stamped steel one)
The "backing plate" piece of tin on the back of the generator was shaped different than the 30 amps came with... it sunk "in" tword the fan instead of out a bit like on all the rest... this made up for the approx. 1/2 ish inch longer overall size of the 38 amp...
What is likely is that a 30 amp gen has been installed on this tin which is wrong for it and the misalignment is causing belts to jump off or wear and break when they reach a higer rpm... I have seen this numerous times over the years... Although I have also seen the 38 amp get put on the "bug/ghia tin" and the same result..... misalignment...
No amount of pushing or pulling of the fan housing/gen with the strap loose will be enough to correct this... you need to figure out which pieces are wrong and aquire the right ones.
You can look on the body of the gen and the amps will be stamped on it... you can look at the tin and may have to look at another engine to see the difference on the backing plate.
There are a few other things it could be... A very warped crank pulley (look at it while it is running)
or a crank or gen pulley that was badly rusted from sitting at one time and the rust pits are "chewing up" the belts like rough sandpaper (If there is black belt dust everywhere then all of the above can cause the belts to wear out real fast...)
Also make sure you have a total of at least 10 shims in combination INSIDE and OUT when you tighten the pulley....
Speirsn, I agree the Connie belts are some of the best... and tightening it up too tight will not help.... hope you get it straightend out... |

Actually I checked and it is 69-71's with the 38 amp gen, not 68's.... wanted to get that corrected.
As far as 100k oil, might be great for newest cars on the road but Air cooled Vw engine technology is still pretty much 1930's engineering.... read the other threads on on these boards to get everyones (mixed) opinions on oil... I have never heard of the brand myself but will check out that site! Sounds interesting anyway.... |

Bus: GR 17X
Bug: GR 15X
Save up for an alternator.
Oil: I use 30 wt. year 'round, but I live in California. I have using 30 wt. for 25 years.
I change it now and then. Sometimes I change my underwear too, but not as often. |
