View original topic: Importing a bus to the EU (Hungary)...need advice

So I'm moving to Hungary, and am taking my bus. But I've been hit with the disturbing news that Hungary bans imports of vehicles over 7 years old. I think that might be for citizens (I am a dual US/Hungarian citizen). Being dual, I can also keep it registered in the US, and take it to Germany, as I understand it, or maybe the UK. These two countries seem to be the most lenient. In any case, I would be prepared to use it in Hungary as a "tourist", like the people who take their cars or bikes to europe for a year of touring. Would i need to get the MOT for this?

Have any Samba members done this? I notice a ton of cars being bought here and imported to the UK... how do they get around it? Or do I just end up driving in and out of HUngary every six months and live with it?

Hi, you might get more information on the most popular Hungarian VW aircooled forum: http://www.bogarhatu.hu/forum/index.php There might be some people who know the answer to your question, the mostly speak English too. If not I can help you with Hungarian.

Why does he have to import? He'll be a tourist. He can drive his bus here. I think he doesn't need a MOT.
We have to talk about import, if we want to register the car in Hungary. (then he needs a MOT and a ton of burocratic stuff, forget this option)
And within EU (at least in "Schengen" countries) there are no borders (custom offices to stop) at the country borders anymore. So who would know, when has he entered Hungary? Even if the 6 months rule apply.

But Switzerland is not EU. So take care, and stop at the border guards :D
