I got this Beetle a few months back for 200 bucks , it needs heater channels and some welding on the back body mounts and also under the back seat , I took the body of a while ago .
The previous owner had painted it with aluminum paint , that looked like crap , Originally I was going to sand the aluminum paint and the OG Fontana gray off and repaint it Fontana gray , I was assuming that the OG paint was really bad and thats why it wasrepainted . A few days ago I sprayed oven cleaner on it and here there was really nice OG paint underneath the aluminum paint .
Here are some pics I took of it yesterday after I polished it .

My appologies in advance for the crappy cell phone pics .

I still cleaned off the passenger side fender , the whole car was painted like it is , I think that the previous owner was touching up a few spots and got carried away with his brush .
Perhaps it's protected the OG finish for the last 10 or 15 years , it was last on the road in 1995 .
My plan it to keep it ap original as possible and to replace the heater channels and weld the floor pan , there is a few small holes near the drivers seat track and also at the pedals , and the battery area also has one about the size of a quarter .
I had bought the engine out of it a few months before I bought the bug , it is the stock 40 HP with proper #'s for 1965 , I was originally going to put it into the 1956 kombi , but I found a few 36 HP's for it , so I needed a place to use the engine , so I bought the bug .
So actually it's a $350 bug

Wishing you perseverence and fun while repairing the car. 20 yrs ago I found a '65 rolling shell Beetle in Fontana Grey; did not do much with it so sold it to a work colleague who assembled it and drove it for a few years. F-Grey is a nice color, IMO.

Fontana gray is a really nice colour 8) , I can't understand why is was painted over .
Today I sanded the replacment fender down ,it's the one for the front passenger side , the original is pretty beat up . I picked the other one for 20 bucks off a friend . It has a few small dents , I hammered them out today and am going to put a skim of filler over them and then block sand it .
That fender and the drivers side door will be the only parts that get completely repainted I got a colour match to fontana gray and I will just do touch ups everywhere else .
