| I bought a bus with Vanagon mirrors on it. I'd recomend finding a Late model elephant ear mirror. Bigger vision /less tacky. |

At one time Bus Depot was selling larger Brazilian bus mirrors. But it looks like they are no more. Much better than those god-awful truck mirrors!
I don't see them listed anymore here either:

Any pics of baywindow(s) with Vanagon mirrors? Doesn't sound that bad.

| Has anyone tried to make the earlier elephant ear type mirror fit into the collar that screws into the door? The arm would probably have to be cut down then rethreaded to fit. |

I had the GA mirrors on my '71 Westie and they were great. I got quite a few compliments on them. And i could see traffic behind for a change.
Will be putting them on my '77 Westie at some future date, just haven't found the exact ones i want.
edit to second the request as to where you found them.

I found my GA mirrors on ebay. They are stainless steel and should last awhile. Driving a Panel is difficult without good mirrors. The stock ones arnt quite large enough. The GA mirrors I found will look good and go well with my panel. They will ship tomorrow but shipping will take about a week. I will post some pics when the get here :)
Here are pictures of what I purchased.

that looks pretty much like the link i have saved:
http://www.awdirect.com/catalog.cfm?dest=itempg&am...linkid=219
i'm hoping to find some that are brushed, and not as shiny, i'm not partial to bling/shine. Either i will end up finding the ones i want, or will paint or powdercoat (if possible) some.
hope you got a good price on those.

I wanted too but I dont have the proper tools to do the job. You would be surprised how much stress is put on where the mirrors attach due to driving wind. All my attempts were too weak :( |

I have a pair of the God awful truck mirrors on my Westy. I'll post a pick tomorrow. (too dark now) I put them on in July. I love them. With an early Westy's window-blocking closet, the original mirrors were woefully inadequate. I used to have Chevy truck mirrors mounted. They improved the visibility but were ugly and awkward. (check my photos in the gallery) The new ones are less of an eyesore. I bought mine on Amazon. They are Cipa Jr. West Coast mirrors, about $20 each. I had to take mine to a machine shop and have the bottom arms cut and re-threaded. I didn't need them 16" out from the bus. It cost $20 to have them cut and re-threaded.

When I first got my bay it had elephant ears on it. They screw right
into the little "collar' on the door. I loved them, but they were in
really sad shape. A friend of mine had a set of the correct mirrors
that he gave me so I used them instead.
Like I said, I really liked the elephant ears, but the stick out just
far enough that whenever I parked in a public lot, I'd come out and
sure enough some idiot would have bumped into them and I end up
readjusting them everytime.
I really like what redbus Steve said about being able to see around
the closet using truck mirrors. I might have to look into it. I'd love to
see some pictures with the "God awful truck mirrors". |

I've seen GA truck mirros @ the Advanced Auto FLAPS for $~25ea.
and yes sometimes... sometimes seeing is better then style.
now if they would only add a heater element to the smaller ones like the big trucks have. |

I like that idea, Maybe you could get some of the replacement rear defogger wire and put it on the mirrors. |

Me too! Question, when you install these does the lower mount hide the original mirror hole? |

Hello,
Since we're back on the subject of larger mirrors... was wondering if anyone out there has these:
I have the mirrors (bought them awhile ago) but do not have the mounting hardware. I found a picture of the mounting HW in the Gallery:
Does anyone out there have these? Even better, does anyone have the mounting hardware? Thanks. |
