Hey all,

My first post here...

I recently purchased a 74 Standard Beetle, with a newly rebuilt engine from a year old for $150. Life long CA car, so no rust issues...as far as I can see now...doh....

I'm planning on making it a nice presentable car (not concours) and most likely I'll keep Glenn's write up as a guide line. So I'll be pulling the motor soon. According to the PO it needs a new transmission, but I'll have to see what's wrong with it.

I still need to learn a LOT about Beetles, so you guys are a great help. So far my money has been put in a Porsche 944, so at least I'm staying in the same family.

Cheerio.

"Pics or it didn't happen"

Hang around here and read everything you can get your hands on, before long you will be answering questions and not asking them.

I've got a ton of pictures on my website from when I restored my '74.

If I can restore a Bug, anyone can. (well, if you have money to spend)

As you can see, there's quite a bit of work, but hey...that's the fun of it...

I'm really hoping to drive it this summer if everything goes to plan...
Anybody got a hood?! :?

WildWally Tue Jan 29, 2008 7:53 pm

OK is it just me, but it doesn't look like a 74 to me, it should have the energy absorbing bumpers, the elephant tail lights, and the 4 row vent deck lid. I have a 74 that is why i am asking.

Bashr52 Tue Jan 29, 2008 8:12 pm

yup def not 74 bumpers or lights. I think 69 or 70 was the last year for those taillights so thats where I'd put it. Could be earlier bumpers on a late car though... It does have the rear window vents on the sides so its not a 69.......

Kelley Tue Jan 29, 2008 8:26 pm

Yeah, check your vin. 74 sedans had vins starting with 114.

Exige Tue Jan 29, 2008 8:44 pm

I was hoping some of you could help me out with that...I was dealing with the same issue.

The Vin does start with 114, and the title does say 74... Is it possible that the bumpers have been swapped at some point???

WildWally Tue Jan 29, 2008 9:05 pm

Are you looking at the VIN plate on the dash or the one under the rear seat. You might have a 74 pan with an older body.

Exige Tue Jan 29, 2008 9:20 pm

Hmmm, I looked on the dash, on the door jambs and in the paperwork. These numbers match. I haven't checked the number under the rear seat...

It's possible, but check the tunnel VIN stamp, remove rear seat bottom and you should see a plate with a screw on it. If you don't see the vin directly, remove the plate and it should be right there.

a lot of VWs got titled and registered as other years.
normally that happened in the dealers paperwork.
leave it alone, but know it is earlier then a 74,
71 or 72

Hmmm...very interesting. Well, I'll do some more VIN checking. Thanks for your guys' help!
