I need to replace the airbag sensor in a 1996 passat wagon, can someone tell me where it is, and how to get it out?

The main sensor is located in the control unit. This is bolted to the frame behind the center console, under the ductwork from the heater box. You might be able to see it by the gas pedal.

Is there any trick to replacing it? (things I need to remove to get to it... I've replaced both airbags already)

I believe it's just a few nuts that hold it in place, 10mm scoket needed, and mayble a small screwdriver to get the lock tab loose on the connector.

WOW !

the VW engineers had to stay up late to find the most INACCESSABLE location on the car for this thing!!! :evil:

BURIED way up front on the hump... in front of all the heater ducts... I spent an houtr disassembling my car to get to it!

I have one I bought at a junk yard (a non-crashed vehicle) with the P/N

6N0 909 601

(a 1995 Passat GL)

it's not the same P/N as mine... shall I use it?

Will I still need to have the airbag light turned off with a VAG?
