friend has a 1970 bus and has put new shockes on back but still sits very low in back or very high in front not sure.Any ideas on how to get it level or find out the right ride height?

Remember, all of the weight is in the back, so it won't sit level. Mine does the same thing.

Also the front sits lower when there is someone sitting in the front seats.

It does sorta look goofy when there is nobody inside.

To put your mind at ease, compare it to other busses.

could be the torsion springs need adjusting. or the shocks on the front are to stong, some gas shocks will do this.

Ah yes the old Bay window ass sag.Happens over the yrs.The fix is to ajust the torsion arms 1 notch down. DavidK 71Deluxe 69S/Cab.

It's defantly the torsion arms in the rear. It's a good Saturday project but well worth it. The VW factory book by Bentley has a bit on how to do it. I did it to my 71 and now I can see out the rear window. It rides a bit better too.

When lifting the rear by torsion bar adjustment it is possible to fine tune the
height somewhat because the inner and outer
splines on the bars are different,so a spline change on the outer will give a different result than on the inner.also when lifting
the rear the stock shock can become too short
causing the shock to limit upward travel.
the rancho 5000 shock specified for a 95 ford ranger is the fix,it is adjustable for
ride and loads. It works great on my 71 panel
with a 2 liter and 15" wheels and taller tires ...DWS

how does it adjust?

Bryan67 Tue Mar 18, 2003 12:40 pm

Why do people always think changing shocks will raise their car? It is the torsion bars os coil springs that hold it up not the shocks. You will either have to readjust your rear torsions or lower the front end
using drop spindles or an adjustable beam.
The stock size shocks will work fine. The rear of your bus has just settled down over the years.

The rancho shock has a small black dial at the base witch adjusts from 1 to 5 positions
that affect the valve orifice size in the shock

I just bought some albatros adjusters from the bus-boys. I bet your bus will look great when you lower the front end.

just a suggestion.
