After driving up to Transporters by the Tunnel in Massachusetts last weekend, I discovered that I have two exhaust leaks coming out of the junction of the heater box and the "U-tube" on both sides. Anyone have any ideas on where to find the parts to fix this problem?
Also, my 78 Westy (stock FI) ran hot because I am missing the hoses/parts that go from the blower motor through the engine tin and into the heater boxes. Not having these parts, I am unsure if it is just regular old heater hose that goes through the holes or what? Please help.
Finally, please tell me exactly which electronic ignition to purchase for my camper. I don't want to be stranded by burned up points!
Thanks in advance!
Brian
P.S. Thanks to all who lent a helping hand at the campout especially you, notsobigkahuna! |

The local vw parts store should have the exhaust gaskets. The U-tubes are only used (sans samba).
The hose is sold by the foot at the vw parts stores.
Opinions vary but I say get a Pertronix Ignitor 1847V. RMMW has the best price. |

Actually I just bought some U-tubes new from CIP1.com http://tinyurl.com/hv12 They should be here today. Ill let you know what kind of quality they are after they arrive. A bit spendy but if they are really new worth it. Its the manifolds that are impossible to find new and even used still cost a small fortune.

OK, UPS just dropped them off. First thing is that they both say that they are for the left side. On the page above it says left or right and I assumed that they were inerchangable. I held them up to my current ones and they seem to be, so hopefully they will fit correctly. The angle of the flanges are going to have to line up right on both sides if they are inerchangable.
As you can see in the photo on CIP1 these are not welded on the inside of the flange also like the OEM elbows are just from the outside. I thought this may cause a problem with the gasket sealing since there is a small gap. After holding a gasket up to the flange, I see that the sealing bead on the gasket sits outside of this gap so it should not cause any problems. The flange also seems to be very flush with the pipe so very little sanding/lapping should be needed.
Good luck with your leaks. Ive been messing with mine for the last couple weeks and finally decided to replace everything from the manifolds to the muffler. One more example of a simple job turning into a spendy one for me.

P.S. I also have the Pertronix 1847v module in my bus. Haven't had any problems yet. I do still cary an extra set of points and condensor just in case though. |

I goofed on the availability of new ones. Bus Boys was charging a lot for used ones because they couldn't get new.
There is only one part: interchangable between L and R. |

I looked at the pic in the link. The triangle flange appears to be 1/2 the thickness of the originals. Got a magnet handy? Is the U pipe steel or non-magnetic stainless like the originals?
The heater hoses should attach to metal tubes that stick up thru the tin about 1/2". Do you have the metal tubes?
The left air tube between the blower and the metal tube is larger in diameter than the right. It is part # 211 261 235A. The right air tube is round on the top end and oval on the bottom. It is part # 211 261 236A.
But you also need the plastic tube that goes around your air filter. It is 9A in this pic: http://www.bug-bits.freeserve.co.uk/ramva/fiche/t202800.gif
The hoses are 10 and 11A.
The metal tubes are #29 here:

Left and right are different. The one in the pic is the left. The right is straight. 72-74 and 79 is round on top and round on bottom. 75-78 is oval on bottom.
I have all the pieces.... even good used original U pipes. cheaper than new. |

Nope, the pipes are steel. So here is another spot for rust I guess. I hope everything lines up like the originals. I'll find out tomorrow. If I could have used my originals I definitely would have but the flanges were way to cupped from rust to make a seal. |
