Well, it's about time I made this thread. Prepare for long post.

Saturday before last ( 1-19-08 ), my dad bought me my first car, a 1967 Squareback.
It's super faded, but should buff out nicely, and has a nice interior. It's EXTREMELY solid, with the only rust I've found being tiny holes in the bottoms of the front fenders, and a bit of surface rust on right side of pan, and battery tray, but it will hold a battery being repeatedly slammed on it.

The good:
84k miles
Sat out in the desert for 20+ years
Nice OG paint, especially underhood and inside
Most everything works, electrical is being sorted.
Nice interior
Runs decent for firing on three cylinders, rebuilt carbs
Original black plates
Pretty complete
Complete original Air conditioner system, but disconnected
VW roof rack
Cheap.

The bad:
Fires on three cylinders
Electrical issues (being fixed)
Sat out in the desert for 20 years, so I need new rubbers, paint is faded, and engine needs a going-over.
Cannot prove plates are original, so can't register them

The Ugly:
Pop riveted vents, flipped around.
Big rattle can spot on left side rear
Dent in rear apron/hatch

Needs:
A/C Fixed or removed
Engine rebuild
Mild lowering
Paint buffed
Interior reinstalled
Clock fixed
'67 only rear view mirror
'67 only window crank
'67 only passenger seatbelt
Kickpanel/sill carpet
(Want) Trip speedo
Radio bracket
Fender beading
One front fender trim, one door trim (thin style 67-74)

Two sets of plans:
Short term - Clean it, buff it, drop it, put in interior, make it run well
Long term - Paint it (two tone Granada Red/Pearl White roof), get rims, new interior, bigger engine

Enough text, let the pictures roll...

Upon purchasing the car

I do have the proper mirror installed now

Matching numbers, might be original

NICE ride dude! iv got a 71 with FI, red, check out the samba youth thread. Im JSMskater in the t3 forum, so if you ever need help you know where to go!

looks like the interior is in pretty good shape, ur just missing the dash pad.

paint can wait, but rubber is definitely a must do! you can get cal look seals in a cheap kit from ISPwest, and install them yourself, except the windshield, which you should get done by a pro.

why is the engine running on 3 cylinders? it looks like its in pretty good shape, and stock ones are hard to come by these days. my guess is a bad spark plug or wire.

also, that rust should be an easy easy fix, its not bad at all. also FYI, those fenders being riveted on the other way was a dealer option back in the day, to fix a perceived engineering defect. in reality it didnt make any difference, and there wasnt anything wrong with the stock vents. However its an interesting piece of VW history, and I'd keep it. I had it on my 69 fastback, and it adds colorful character to a car.

also, KEEP THE A/C! i would take it to an AC shop to get new hoses and a new dryer/dehumidifier as well as a new smaller aftermarket compressor that wont rob your engine of power. the ac unit itself is pretty indestructible, and there are VERY few A/c t3's left.

I've got the pad, and my window rubbers are DECENT. I'm not a fan of Cal-look rubbers anyway, and I wanna keep my popouts (which DO need new seals). They're usable until I get it painted.

The engine has low compression, and loses pressure. If I wanted a quick fix, p/c's, rings, heads checked should fix it, the wires are new, dunno about the plugs. Might be better to get the whole thing rebuilt though, in case something went bad in the case later on. Better to get it fixed well once, than in little parts many times. I want a bigger engine though, but if I did, I'd try to build it with all new/used parts, and keep my stock engine elsewhere.

I may keep the riveted vents, unless I find some clean fenders for cheap enough.

The A/C I'll definetly keep, even if I remove it. Should be fixable, but I'll get it checked by a shop.

Thanks for compliments.
