| I just finished replacing fuel injection with a progressive carb on an 82 aircooled Vanagon. It does run, but not well. It sputters along even if the accelerator is floored. Acts kind of like the choke isn't working right or something. Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated! |

I would start by checking for vacuum leaks in the intake, like around the intake ports on the heads, the rubber boots that connect the manifold to the base of the carb stand (for lack of a better description). Also check that the vacuum attachments on the carb are plugged or in use, and lastly, have you connected the vacuum hose for the brake servo.
good luck. |

| those are very hard to get to run right!it would run sweet with dual 40 idf webers! did you switch the stock distributor with a 009? it won't work without it.and you need to set the timing at 10 degrees or it will stumble like mad!iv'e mad them work o.k.by drilling the main jets up a little and playing with the accelerator pump adjustment? it will only run decent on the rich side! good luck steve |

I am running a Weber progressive 32DFEV on my 78 bus. It runs well right after I time it and adjust the Idle. Then after it sits for a while it will have trouble starting and will run irradically. I'm using a stock vac. advance dist.
My point is that it does run fairly well at all speeds the transition between gears is not bad either, untill I shut it off and let it sit for a few hours. I'm sure there is some little thing I am doing wrong. But once I figure that out I think it will run fine.
Check for vacum leaks make sure your idel and timing are set right and keep fidiling with it. I am sure you will get it... |

They will work with both the stock and the 009, just different timing and other minor tuning adjustments... I did a 2.0 hydrolic late model motor into a 74 Westy for a guy recently and it was running OK with the 009 but he wanted to try a vacume from aircooled.net and it did run better, a little less oooohmphhy but smoother which is what he wanted for the wifey to still want to drive it.
just did an 1800 rebuikld for a 72 with a Brand new kit out of the box and with an 009 and pertronix it runs excellent...
It really does vary from combination and or each dist and carb can have different tendencies...
Fungi, sounds like your choke setting or the bi-metallic spring in the choke is bad (warped) take it off and look, if it is not a perfect "coil" (misshapen not round) then it is not gonna do right or you float level is a bit to high or you possibly have a needle/seat issue... |

keifernet what did you time the vac advance dist on the 74. I timed my 78 with the stock vac advance to 7.5 BTDC, that is what was recomended in the haynes for my bus.
I will check my carb out.
Thanks keiferet |

Fungi was that with or without the vacume line on/plugged off?
I would check to see that the vacume can is "holding vacume" by taking the cap off and sucking on the hose and holding your tounge on the end. if the plate stays it's good if it drifts back slow it has a pin hole and will loose vacume at RPM and is going bad.
Also some distribs rely on both vacume and mechanical( not just one (009 and others) or the other (earlier-1970 single can)
to check the rotor/shaft and put a drop of lube under the rotor and "twist it" with the rotor on to see if it moves free and "springs back"
( same thing should be done periodically to 009's to make sure the mechanical advance works properly) |

keifernet -
That is with my vacume line on.
I will check that. I can say know that I dont think my rotor springs back like it should.
My dist is a combination vac and mech. |

See if it has a small round felt piece under the rotor (it could be missing though) but if it does then it is meant to have a drop of oil on it ocassionaly (see Bently or other manual) and is combination type.
You could also get the #'s off it and check on www.type2.com or I think it is oldvolks site and maybe a few others with the charts that give you all the distrib specs by #'s and years breakdown....
I think it should be set with the line off and port on carb plugged.... |
