View original topic: 2001 GTI Driver's side window woes...

I was driving to school in my girlfriends 2001 GTI this AM and there had been a deep freeze last night so the windows were iced over. I go to try the window to roll it down to see out and its stuck. I try a few times more on the drive with no luck. Then, the window falls down into the door, didn't brake. Scared us both half to death.

Heres the question and it may seem simple but before I start tearing her door apart I want to know what to expect...

What holds the panel to the door? I don't see any hardware so I am assuming its those plastic Christmas tree looking things that go into a hole in the door about the size of a pencil. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Okay, there are 3 torx (t20) on the bottom of the door pannel. There is one phillips near the speaker by the mirror. You will need a small screw driver to seperate the inner part of the grip, so you can pop out the pannel that the window switches live in. Once that piece is off, there are 3 phillips screws that secure the door handle part of the pannel to the door. Once you take that stuff off, you can just pop the whole door pannel off the door. There will be some electrical connectors to disconnect, and the cable that connects the inner door release handle to the latch. With the pannel out of the way, you will see 2 circular rubber plugs in the silver (or possible black) regulator pannel. That is the access points to the screws on the clamps that attach the glass to the regulator. If you pull the inner widow scraper rubber off the door (Just a press fit) you should be able to get enough fingers in there to pull the glass back up with out having to take anything else apart. Once you get the glass out, slide it up it's guides and tape it in place. Reconnect the window swithces so you can raise or lower the mechanism so you can see the clamps though the access holes. Then it's just a matter of loosening the clamps so you can get the glass back in them. Now you will have a functioning window again. Put everything else back together, and you're done. You can put some silicone adhesive on the rubber and the glass to help prevent this from happening again.
