Anyone been to a show or know of the place? it has been there since the early 70's and the last show is coming up on the 24th of this month!

I have seen bands ranging from S.O.A.D, TSOL, Incubus, Steel Pulse Pato Banton.... and so on.
It was a dirty place, but it was host to Club Rubber for many years, and had a few movies filmed there including rush hour 2. Just curious if anyone has stories from that place...

I've been to a few shows there. Last one I remember was Leon Russell in the early 90s... he was old then, the Galaxy was old then and I was starting to get old then.

What will the last show be there?

edit: the last punk show sounds like fun...

Yeah, had a party there, showed my film...had some bands.
Cool joint.

Yo, you did American Hardcore right?
Just wanted to say that that movie was bad ass!
Thank you for doing it, I loved it!

Are you going to do any more?

Club Rubber will be the last event there. I was there yesterday, and saw flyers for The Iron Maiden's, The Eels, and some punk band that I didn't recognize.
Orange county really needs a new venue, house of blues sucks, Verizon is selling out to a housing project, and the Bren center isn't all that great!

I saw Rollins do a stand up show there about 10 years or so ago. Club Rubber was always a big deal.

Anyone remember Linda's Doll Hut in Anacrime? I remember (trying) to see Bad Religion there when I was in high school. Later on I saw L7 there booked as K9. That place was as big as a studio appartment.

The Grove is lame too. I saw Dinosaur Jr. there a couple years back. That place was originally set up to be an eatertainment place ala Midevil Times. Not exactly the rock hang out you wish it was.

No kidding? That movie was great. My only bitch was that it wasn't long enough... 4-5 hours would have been a good start!

Agreed, the Grove sucks, but they do get some decent acts! I like how they have it set up to do outside shows. Orange county needs something new, to draw some good bands this way. I think it's coming...

The grove kicks ass. What are you talking about? You probably don't like the Coach House then, either. Great sound, reserved seats, so you can sit and actually see above the heads, and a standing orchestra pit. How would you change it?

BTW, I'm headed to the Galaxy tonight to see Robin Trower.

TimB Thu Feb 07, 2008 2:07 pm

really dmnclnr? Can you tell us Mor about this Project?

Edit: If you want good music in OC you are going to have to go about it the old way and take the drive to LA. It great that Peter, Bjorn and John played Orange County Performing Arts last week but honestly the only time an out of town band plays OC is if they are in LA recording / mixing their album Or the band's tour manager is too lazy to make the band go down to San Diego.

Coach house is the same owner as Galaxy. I have seen a lot of bands play there, but nothing I am personally interested in. The grove on the other hand is a good venue, not great.. I'm not really into what they have done there, or how they set it up.
How would I change the coach house? Personally I wouldn't, It just doesn't have the capacity to draw the style bands that create revenue. It is a great place for the small local band scene.

When you have the right people booking bands, and the best sound/lighting on the west coast, the bands will want to play there!

Yes, Gary is a great guy. I like the way the grove is laid out. You can see from everywhere, it's still small, and good sound.

Damn i live in Santa Ana and didnt even know they were closing it. I know theyre really revitalizing downtown Santa Ana and turning it into an "art district." They actually turned the old Bank of America on Main and Washington(?) into a theatre but i dont know what sort of events theyre having there. Anyway, RIP Galaxy Theatre, always heard of Club Rubber but never got a chance to go..

Check out the last Club Rubber on the 24th. it will be worth it, that club goes off.!
We are talking about doing a 40 years of music tribute to the galaxy there in 2011.

Hope this happens for him and all the show goers...

Quote: Folgner said he plans to open another Galaxy-style venue in the future, setting his sights on somewhere in the Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley area.

I like smaller places to see shows ala Coach House etc. The old Golden Bear was one of my all time favorites. Saw MANY a show there when I lived on 7th St. and one of my roomies worked the door. I won't even mention the CooKoos Nest...

sickbug19 Thu Feb 14, 2008 1:34 pm

I can't that they're closing it! I've been to so many shows there and plenty of memories. One of the best times I've had there was when I went backstage to meet the Cramps that was so kick ass! So many drunken barfights haha.
