Now that i can't get ripped on this subject... Any fans regardless of the teams/countries? I don't want to hear that it is boring to watch, yada yada. Unless you have played the sport and have a basic understanding of it beyond gym class then negative comments hold no place here...

I am an Inter Milan/Manchester City fan. Was a New York Cosmos fan of the old NASL back when Pele was at the end of his career and then when Giorgio Chinaglia followed.

I wouldn't call myself a soccer fan but I definitely don't like football.

obus Sun Feb 10, 2008 12:58 am

i meant soccer aka as football just about everywhere but here. i should have been more clear but it is late and i can be a dummy at times...

90volts Sun Feb 10, 2008 5:07 am

i have to "have played the sport and have a basic understanding of it " to know that it's boring to watch? well, i haven't played and don't have a great understanding of it but i still think sitting at a game for hours with no score and ending in a tie is pointless.

and i haven't played because we didn't have soccer teams to play for when i was growing up. we played football. none of that pansy stuff for us americans. might as well take up dance!

The levels of fitness and stamina required to last out 90 minutes virtually non stop hardly qualify soccer players as pansies you moron.
The fact that the USA now has a highly regarded National team, a ladies World Cup winning squad and one of the fastest growing leagues in the world also seems to have escaped your blinkered point of view.
Have you ever tried to kick a soccer ball 50+ yards with pinpoint accuracy ? It's a damn sight harder than throwing it.

Life long Tottenham Hotspur fan.

90volts Sun Feb 10, 2008 7:04 am

and who's watching them?
yep, thought so.

ballet dancers are damn fit too but i'm pretty sure most of us wouldn't want to do that either. it's just a boring game that just hasn't been able to take hold in america. there's a reason for that.

The rest of the world...that's who. If "Football/Soccer" is such a boring game why are there 50 x more people watching and playing it than American Football?

OK the "Football/Soccer" format doesn't suit the US TV format...no time-outs for advertising but this sport is all about Sport not product promotion. That mean US "Football/Soccer" doesn't get the exposure it needs.

"Football/Soccer" is accessable to just about every build of person...you don't have to be built like a brick sh*t-house to play. Nor do you need to spend $$$ to get all the protective kit.

As for Pansies, American Football should look at Rugby...it's a tougher game than American Football without the protective gear.

Who cares about the rest of the world?

I always thought soccer was a boring, 90 minute game of keep-away. But it's a good game for kids, so I signed all mine up. My daughter has begun to play at a fairly high level. After watching many games, I have come to appreciate the level of athleticism and endurance it takes to do well at that boring, 90 minute game of keep-away.

90volts Sun Feb 10, 2008 9:24 am

i do agree that football is easy compared to rugby.

of course no one watches rugby on tv either. no following here.

rest of the world sure, but for our purposes it may as well not exist- no interest.

Yea but they don't really matter as much as Americans. If we say American Football is the only real sport in this world then it must be true.

You present a very persuasive case...I bow to your superior knowledge.

Like to play. Don't like to watch. The high-light shows are great 'cause you can watch all the great shots, saves or goals in 30 minutes and that cuts out all the boring passing. And penalty kicks to give games an outcome suck. They should play 'till someone scores or until they all drop from exhaustion.

Yep I played from the age of 5 and on into my forties. I'd still be playing some kind of football now if it wasn't for a neck injury. Watching is a poor substitute for playing but being brought up on Cricket as well, where International games last 5 days, you develop a loooong attention span.

Aaaah a blue nose! and very well they are doing too...scared the bejeebers out of the other lot in the city earlier on in the season...Ericsson is de man...great footballing brain, did great things for our national team

Soccer, played correctly is a beautiful and emotional sport.
It is unfortunate that you in the colonies never see fluent exciting football.....forward passes that make your hair tingle...set pieces that bamboozle defences...flowing uninterrupted gameplay that just get you out of your seat...or climbing on someones shoulders

american footy is played by large bovines needing a cattle prod...sorry coach..with territory in the field the only objective.
just like soccer the ability to receive a pass..out wit the defence with tactics, makes American football exciting...But you guys love your commercial breaks..and you orgasm at stats
I have watched superbowl many times...and this years was up there with the best...BUT, like soccer... there are some really shit games.

British football fans actually watch the game? I thought it was pretty much about public drunkenness, and stomping the crap out of the other team's fans with hobnail boots?

Right. 400 Brits arrested at the World Cup in 2006 is so very 1970's.

Quote: Police believe rioters consumed or threw about 17 litres of beer each in Stuttgart and 400 England 'fans' were taken into preventative custody.
